It is with deep sadness but with hearts full of love that we announce the passing of Mary Judith “Judy” Gay (née Brownrigg) on October 10, 2026. Born in Halifax on September 24, Judy grew up in Dartmouth, where she built the foundation of a life defined by family, friendship, and enduring warmth.
In 1965, Judy married the love of her life, Wayne David Gay, in Dartmouth, where they also established their first marital home. Together, they welcomed their two children, Tim (Tanya) and Tina (Morgan). Around 1975, the family purchased a cherished cottage on Cook’s Lake, Middle Musquodoboit, which became the backdrop for decades of beautiful memories before becoming their full-time residence about 20 years later. Sixteen years ago, Judy and Wayne moved to Economy, where they thoroughly enjoyed the tranquility of rural life together until shortly before Wayne’s passing on February 2, 2022.
A fiercely social person, Judy took immense pride in her large family. She loved getting together with loved ones to play cards, craft, share a meal, and simply enjoy each other's company. Her siblings and their families were central to her life, frequently gathering for pool parties, barbecues, birthdays, milestones, and their highly anticipated annual trips south.
Judy made every effort to be a constant, grounding presence in the lives of her grandchildren, often holding their secrets and guiding them through life with the unique care and intention only a grandmother can possess. Her home was always filled with love and defined by the comforting presence of a dog. Among many beloved pets, Maggie and Shadow held a special place in the hearts of the family, serving as an extension of the affection and comfort Judy so naturally showed to everyone around her.
Judy is survived by her loving siblings, Jim (Shirley) and Marg (Fred), and was predeceased by her siblings Bob (Noreen), Cathy (Don), Doug (Helen), and Irene (Ed). She leaves behind a massive, tight-knit family legacy, including over 25 nieces and nephews. Her memory lives on beautifully through her children Tim (Tanya) and Tina (Morgan), her grandchildren, Courtney (Carlie), Jessica (Thomas), Olivia, and Evan, as well as her great-grandchildren, Mara, Benjamin, and a newest arrival due any day.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Dartmouth General Hospital and Opal Ridge for their exceptional care and support during her end-of-life journey. A service to celebrate Judy's life will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home located at 339 Lacewood Dr, Halifax, on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at 10:00 AM, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of her deep love for animals, donations in Judy's memory may be made to Hope for Wildlife, a local animal shelter, or an animal agency of your choice.
