It is with great sadness the family of Julia Haddad, age 85 of Halifax, Nova Scotia (formerly of Westville, N.S.) that we announce her passing away suddenly on Friday, June 26, 2026 at the QEII in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Julia was born in New Glasgow, N.S. on March 13, 1941. She was the daughter of the late Jacob and Wordy Haddad. Julia was predeceased by her sister Thelma Joseph and brothers David and John Haddad. She was the youngest of 6 siblings and is survived by sisters Mary Kays and Sadie Shama of Charlottetown, PEI, Jean Joseph of Springhill, N.S., and sister-in-law Pat Haddad of Westville, N.S.
Julia will also be missed by her numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, along with her numerous friends, neighbours, clients, and coworkers she befriended over the years.
After graduating from Business College in New Glasgow, she worked for the Bank of Nova Scotia in New Glasgow, Charlottetown, and Montreal. Upon her return to Nova Scotia, she enjoyed her employment as a secretary for Sobeys Foods Halifax office located at the Aberdeen Mall. This is where her flair for clothing and sense of style developed, as she often arranged regular Fashion Shows for the Aberdeen Mall retailers.
Eventually Julia decided on a career change, beginning her studies at Mario’s School of Hair Design. As a successful graduate, she began her 40-year profession as a Hair Stylist in various salons in the city of Halifax. She retired from the Head Shoppe in December of 2020. Julia proved to be a gifted hair stylist and maintained many loyal clients. Julia loved her occupation and made many strong and lasting friendships through her work. She truly connected with her clients, as well as her (often younger) coworkers, who affectionately called her ‘Jules’. Julia would go above and beyond to provide service to her regular customers, such as driving them to and from her appointments, visiting them at their retirement homes, or even doing treatments in her home after her own retirement.
Although Julia enjoyed her long career as a hair stylist, there is no denying her true passion was food and entertaining. Her customer and coworkers were often treated with home cooked food from Julia, and she loved hosting weekly dinner parties for friends and family, often mixing the two. You never knew who would be invited, or who you might meet at one of her gatherings. Julia truly loved life and lived it to the fullest. Her kind and giving spirit was best expressed through cooking and sharing her culinary skills. While living in Halifax, she was pleased to be invited to host Middle Eastern Cooking Classes. One newspaper article even named her as the local ‘Julia Childs’. When cooking for family and friends, meals were often a combination of the Middle Eastern dishes she learned from her Syrian mother and hearty Maritime staples like stuffed roast turkey with gravy. Julia would rarely allow her guests to go home empty handed – this was how she showed her love for others. Many of these gatherings were documented for Julia’s Facebook page as she never missed an opportunity (like it or not) to take pictures!
Another great love of Julia’s life was travelling. She always looked forward to travelling with her sister Sadie or a close friend to a sunny destination. Most memorable to her are the vacations where she got to spend time with family. Her niece Barb often thoughtfully included Aunt Julia in her family’s vacations to Palm Springs, California, of which Julia spoke fondly. Julia’s travels often included regular road trips to Prince Edward Island to visit her friends and two sisters Mary and Sadie. She would always be sure to visit her sister Jeannie who lived en route to the island. Julia and Sadie loved their hot summer beach days and enjoying the island sun. Julia invariably stayed at her sister Mary’s home in Charlottetown – so much so, there is a bedroom referred to as ‘Julia’s room’. Though she enjoyed her standing invitation to stay with her sister Mary, it is amusing to note that Julia often wasn’t as welcome into the kitchen, as Mary has a strict ‘stay out of my kitchen’ rule, your here to rest which no one, not even Julia, could break. Mary’s home is where many fond memories were made with Julia’s family in PEI, especially during the holidays.
Julia lived in Halifax for over 50 years, where she eventually purchased a Condominium in the North End after much encouragement from her good friend Sarah Lynk. Julia was blessed with good friends and family who loved and appreciated her humour and lively manner. Many of us were often entertained with a ‘You’re so handsome!’ or a ‘You’re so beautiful!’ comment when she greeted you with a warm hug.
Julia’s zest, enthusiasm, and commitment to life experiences amounted to a natural ability to connect to just about anyone. She possessed a rare gift of building community not only within her family, but also wherever she lived and worked.
She happily maintained friendships through calls, visits, and social media, no matter where she was in the world, or what she was going through.
Julia will be greatly missed, forever loved, and fondly remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
Jesus said “In My Fathers house are many rooms; if it were not so I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you; I will come back and take you to be with me that you may also be where I am” (John 14:1-3)
A visitation will take place on Thursday July 9, 2026 from 2-4 pm and 6 - 8 pm. A funeral service will take place on Friday July 10 at 2:00 pm, all to take place in J.A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, NS
Donations – In lieu of Flowers, Donations may be made in Memory of Julia Haddad directly to St. Marks Anglican Church, 5522 Russell Street, Halifax, NS B3K 1X2
Burial will take place at St. Peters Cathedral Cemetery, Charlottetown, PEI, at a later date.
