Kusum and I were in 11th and 12th grades at the same time (1979-81) in Trivandrum, Kerala, India.  She and her family were our neighbours in the first year.   While I was struggling to find myself, she was this beautiful and clever girl who was very good in her studies, good in extracurricular activities, and very well-mannered and mature for her age.  She got some of the top marks, and a write up about her with her photograph appeared in a local newspaper.

Unfortunately, I lost contact with her until about 40 years later, while we were both living in Canada.  I am glad I could visit her at her home in Halifax some years before she passed away.  I had no idea that that would be the last time I would meet her.   She was indeed a beautiful flower!  My heartfelt condolences to her family.

I am so sad and sorry to learn that Kusum is no more.  This once again reminds me of how delicate and transitory our lives are.

We used to play table-tennis sometimes.  She sang at the get-togethers of our residential area.  I am glad I could visit her again a few years ago in Halifax. I am an alumni from LHMC and heard about Kusum’s untimely demise & fortitude in bearing her illness from her  batch-mates in  LHMC- Sudha Sikri & Sonu Sharma.

As  I read the obituaries, Kusum’s personality & your life together,  came alive to me and I cannot begin to imagine your loss.  

Life is unpredictable and we all have to accept our losses. The acceptance will be aided by the flood of warm memories Kusum has left with everyone with whom she crossed paths. I live in Boston and it is my loss that I did not get to meet her.

It was an absolute shock to hear Kusum passing away. Kusum was a few months younger to me. The Sapru’s were our neighbors in Sector 24, and occasionally we bumped into each other just outside their home gate. I remember her as a gentle, polite and soft-spoken person. The times that I met her she was always vibrant, bubbling with energy and always on a mission. My deepest condolences to Dr and Mrs Sapru, Madhu and Samir, and to Kusum’s husband. Just yesterday, Rosy, Kaku and I were reminiscing about the halcyon days we spent, playing and chit-chatting in sector 24. Thank you for the message today to let me know about the celebration of life for Kusum. I will  be joining you this afternoon . It is with a heavy heart that we will all say goodbye to Kusum . We have been Neighbours for almost twenty years now. We could not have asked for a better family to be next door and you all definitely made our neighbourhood a better place to be. I will always remember chatting with Kusum about her garden. She was wonderful gardening partner. I will miss her. I realize how devastating this has been for you all over the past few years and how much pain she has been in. The last time I spoke with her we were looking at a double rainbow from our respective decks. The image of her smile will be with me forever, in every rainbow I see. She was truly a beautiful person . May your family have  strength carry on. Sending our love and deepest sympathies.Dale and Russ .

Can't forget her and Mohan. Both took care of me and ashok when we went to Chandigarh in June 1992.  She gave dinner to us at her PG place or hostel may be,  inside pgi campus. She even gave food parcels to  we 3 when we embarked on nearby places on excursions. She also accompanied us in many places nearby Chandigarh etc. So many dozens of hard copy photos at home even now with all 4 of us.   She Even visited Kolkata with Mohan when I and ashok visited. So nice, so good and sweet lady.  Can't forget. 

The first thing that struck me when I met Kusum several decades ago, was her wonderful smile -  it not only lit her face up, but seemed to fill the entire room with her warmth and love!  Kusum was a kind, caring and compassionate person, a wonderful doting mother and wife, a dutiful daughter, a loving sibling, an intelligent and smart doctor, an eager learner and a good friend.  She gave of herself even while she struggled through her illness - always smiling, always caring.  

Over the years, we've shared much - laughs, dreams, concerns, hopes, wishes, and talks on life and death.  Kusum was fiercely bold, taking on all the challenges that came her way, not fearful of what lay ahead.  

So to my dear friend Kusum, wishing you a fond and loving goodbye.  And to my dear Mohana, and their two amazing, wonderful blumsies, you are in my thoughts and prayers.  May you be blessed with strength and courage, as Kusum was, to go through your pain. 🕉

A happy toddler is gurgling and rolling around on the kitchen floor regarding an indulgent Mausi with 'gleeful, naughty eyes', her bundle of joy ('BOJ'). I was too young to remember this, of course, but this story was told so often that I can almost picture it and feel it. Although we couldn't really meet as often as one would like in my adult life, she kept in touch over social media and was an ever-present support for me. Her warm nature and smiling eyes would be dearly missed.  Rest in peace, dear Mausi.

Very shocking to learn about the  Kusum’s untimely sad demise . I met her occasionally at my workplace during her residency  in Transfusion Medicine Department at Halifax Infirmary hospital. A quit, calm and compassionate  personality has   departed from the family  as well as a great loss to  the society over the passing away of a young medical professional.

Both of us wish to express our heartfelt condolences to Kusum’s family for her very sad passing away. We want you to know that we are devastated by her untimely passing away. We pray that her soul Rest In Peace.
I was blessed in being fortunate enough to get to know this Angel as her driver educator. What a blessing it has been. Kusum was so caring and thoughtful. Her sincerity and respect was so genuine. She intuitively knew who you were. Her very sincere thoughtfulness touched me deeply. 
By the time she was ready for getting her  license she made a request of me that when her children grew up she would like them to be taught by myself. Request coming from her was in no way I could turn down. Children were very young at that time. About a decade later surely I got a call that her son wanted to take my program and a few years later her daughter. Needless to say that I could not decline that request. As a matter of fact her daughter was in my last driver education class before I could retire. 
All these years I was aware that Kusum was battling an insidious disease. I kept praying that I will be able to fulfill her wish. Thank almighty that allowed me to fulfill Kusum’s wish. 
Such is the legacy of Kusum Sapru. In Hindu scriptures it is mentioned that God is within us. We just have to live a life that allows us that goodness to manifest. Such was the life of Kusum Sapru. Kusum represented that ideal despite untold suffering she herself went through. May God take Kusum into her fold and bless peace on her soul.


It’s such a tragedy to loose such a warm and welcoming person . 
Indeed God takes away the nice ones first to have them around him.
Kusum was the first family like person we had in Halifax .
We cherish every moment spent with her . Hoping and Praying she has a peaceful afterlife .

Dear Kusum Aunty, you were a wonderful woman with beautiful heart. I can't quite believe that you are gone. I have such a pleasant memories of the time we spent together in London in the year 2019. You had child-like curiosity for everything and was full of life. I am going to cherish these memories for the rest of my life. Miss you and may your soul rest in peace. Om shanti.
