Lauchlin Emmet Currie passed away May 15, 2017, at the Halifax Infirmary, Halifax, Nova Scotia, after a short illness. Born in Antigonish in 1935, he was the son of former Chief Justice of Nova Scotia, the late Lauchlin Daniel Currie, and Margaret Jane (Curry) Currie.
Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, Emmet graduated from St. Francis Xavier University and Saint Mary's University.
His career in education began as a teacher in Halifax county schools, becoming principal of B.C. Silver High School, then joining the NSTU executive in 1966, and becoming Executive Secretary (later know as Executive Director) in 1984. After he retired from the NSTU in 1992, he remained active in education, leading the Nova Scotia Educational Leadership Consortium.
In 1972 he took his young family on an adventure to London, England, where he spent a sabbatical year at University of London. Later travels with Bernie spanned the world, from Costa Rica to Montenegro, including many winters spent in Portugal.
While he loved travel, his cottage was where his heart was. He built much of it himself, and spent almost 50 summers there with family, tending his gardens, landscaping, swimming, boating, and relaxing on the deck, overlooking Chester Basin.
He will be remembered for his wry sense of humour, matched by even greater warmth and kindness. His curiosity about all things—from history, to politics, to the latest technology—and his insightful way of looking at the world impressed all who met him. He was a gentle and loving husband and father, and is deeply missed by his family.
Emmet was predeceased by his sisters, Genevieve and Kathleen.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bernadette; sons, Robert (Jennifer) of Halifax, John Lorne (Susan; granddaughter, Rachel of Brampton; daughter, Margaret (Jeremy) of Montreal and his sister, Alice Reid of Waterloo Ontario, and brother, John Hugh (Roberta) of Calgary.
The family extends their appreciation to the staff at the Halifax Infirmary IMCU for their care and compassion during his brief illness, and Dr. Eddy Kinley for his excellent care in the years prior.
