

Jean was born May 31st, 1919 in Glace Bay, NS. She was the daughter of the late George Shears and Margaret MacLean/ Shears. Educated in the Glace Bay Schools, she proudly was her high school graduating class valedictorian.
Jean furthered her education at the Provincial Normal College in Truro NS. Jean was a well-known teacher in Glace Bay where she taught in the New Aberdeen School until her marriage in 1950. Jean and her husband Dick Porter resided in Halifax, but spent seven and one half years in Corner Brook, NL where Dick had been transferred.
Jean was a member of Bethany United Church, Halifax and for a number of years, a member of the Gilchrist Group. She also enjoyed playing badminton at Bethany.Jean was a longtime member of the Waegwoltic Club, the Mayflower Curling Club and several Bridge Clubs in Halifax.
Besides her mother and father, Jean was predeceased by husband Dick, and brothers Arthur, Angus and Russell Shears and grandson, Christopher Porter.
Jean is survived by sister, Katherine (Babe) Sydney NS, son Alan (and Pauline), Oakville ON and daughter Joan, Fort Saskatchewan AB. Jean is also survived by her six grandchildren, Amy and Lisa Porter, Jacob, Isaac, Garret and Neil Greenough and four great grandchildren Austin, Login, Haiden, Everly and Nevaeh.
Visitation will take place from 6-8 PM Wednesday November 2nd at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. Funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM November 3rd at Bethany United Church, Halifax. Interment will be held that same afternoon at Oakridge Memory Garden Cemetery in Lower Sackville.
In lieu of flowers for those who wish, donations can be made to the MS Society or the Salvation Army. The family wishes to thank the staff at Ivany Place for the great care and patience shown our loved one.
