It is with great sadness that the family of Lorraine Florence (Conrad) Noftle of Halifax announces her passing September 10, 2023 after a 6-week illness. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, with her husband and granddaughter holding her hands.
Born in Halifax September 5, 1929, she was the only daughter of Milton E. and Myrtle F. (Graham) Conrad. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Dr. Graham M. D. Conrad. She leaves to mourn her devoted husband Otto M. of nearly 66 years; daughter Leigh, son-in-law John Begley and cherished granddaughter Sophie Lorraine of Halifax; son Dr. Brooke of London, Ontario; sister-in-law Margaret Conrad of Pugwash and Florida; and several loved nieces and nephews and their families in Nova Scotia, Ontario and British Columbia. Lorraine attended Chebucto Road School, Queen Elizabeth High School and graduated from the Halifax Academy of Business.
A devoted member of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, she was convenor of the Altar Guild for many years, for several years a volunteer at both Camp Hill Hospital and Northwood Center and acted as a volunteer fundraiser for innumerable charitable organizations throughout her life. Lorraine had been president of the Archibald MacMechan Chapter, IODE and had been a member of Ashburn Ladies Bowling League, Sunset Bowling League, the Commercial Club of Halifax and the Halifax Gyrettes.
Lorraine loved her family dearly; favourite pastimes included spending summers at the family cottage on the Pugwash Gulf Shore, particularly enjoying watching for deer and especially their fawns, having been there as recently as September 3, 2023 to celebrate her birthday. She also enjoyed travels throughout Canada, the US (in particular Florida and the New England States), and to several more distant locales. Lorraine lived a long and full life and appreciated every moment of it. She was the best listener, best conversationalist, and would drop anything and everything for family whenever they called or needed her, no matter how trivial. Calls never went to the answering machine. Family came first.
Although she lived to a marvelous age, Lorraine’s passing came as a shock to her family. Through her unselfish and giving nature and lifelong example of putting others before herself, the greatest gift she imparted to her children was the belief that one must share time and resources with those in need. Volunteerism was a huge part of who she was as a person and one of the most important teachings she imparted to her children. Lorraine loved and was loved by many; she will be dearly missed.
The family would like to recognize and express sincere gratitude to family physicians Drs. Philip Davis and Frank Doane for their care over the years, as well as to surgeon Dr. Mark Walsh, Dr. J. B. Breau and nurses James and Emma of Halifax Infirmary Unit 5.2 ICU, plus the medical teams of Halifax Infirmary Units 4.1 and 4.2 and VG Unit 9A.
A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Birch Cove, Saturday October 14 at 10 a.m. There will be no visitation. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia, St. Peter’s Anglican Church or a charity of one’s choice.
“If you must bury something let it be my faults, my weaknesses and all prejudice against my fellow man. Give my sins to the devil. Give my soul to God. If by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs it. If you do all I have asked I will live forever.” (Robert M. Test)
