

The family of Lystra Roma Gosine is deeply saddened to announce that she passed away peacefully at home on December 9, 2021. Born August 9, 1933, in San Fernando, Trinidad & Tobago, Lystra was the daughter of Arthur Dayal and Marie Estephanie Dayal. Lystra was educated at St Joseph’s Convent in San Fernando, Trinidad, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, and Dalhousie University Medical School’s ophthalmology program after moving to Halifax in 1968. She eventually went on to become a lecturer in the ophthalmology program and practiced ophthalmology from 1973 to 2015 in Halifax, Dartmouth, Windsor and Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. Lystra organized the Atlantic Provinces Ophthalmological Society, was the chair and secretary of the Royal Commonwealth Society and founded and was the president of the West Indian Commonwealth Society. An avid gardener in the short summer months of Nova Scotia her other interests included sewing, knitting, crochet, auto body repair, and all types of music and ballet. Lystra is survived by her husband of 57 years, Chandra, her sons Paul, Carl (Rachel Filiatrault) and Mark (Karla Makhan), her grandchildren, Jasmine, Lily, Henry and Elliott, and her siblings Ursula, Selwyn, Rolph, Noreen, Glenn and Dennis. She was predeceased by her brother Terrence. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m., Monday, December 13th, at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St, Halifax. Funeral mass 11 a.m., Tuesday, December 14th in St. Thomas Aquinas Church 1725 Oxford St, Halifax, with reception to follow at the Waegwoltic Club, 6549 Coburg Rd., Halifax. All guests are required to have proof of full vaccination, along with government issued photo ID and wear a face covering.
