Margaret Alice Brown

With great sadness we announced the loss of our dear mother and grandmother, Margaret Alice Brown (née Ogilvie) on Friday in Halifax at the age of 90, while in the excellent care of the Berkeley on Pepperell. She was born in Montreal with her twin brother Michael (d. 2022), the second and third of five children to Ruth and Bart Ogilvie together with Sandrea (d. 2022), Jude (d. 2026) and Caro-John. All, despite distances and differences, remained the closest of siblings throughout their lives.

Margaret embodied an extraordinary combination of conviction, kindness, humility and joy which gently charmed those who knew her.

She was famously intolerant of any trouble made on her account, yet constant in the concern and support she offered others. In her family, her neighbourhood and her community, she was unceasingly generous, open-minded and open-hearted in a way that made each of the lives around her happier and richer.

Margaret embraced the humanity and beauty of her adopted home of Nova Scotia, most recently Lunenburg. A reader, walker, collector and artist, Margaret and her husband Ted (d. 2002) filled their household with local antiques, books and art. Her love of fine craft, colour and composition was evident in the several beautiful heritage homes they restored during their years in Mahone Bay and Annapolis Royal, and in her own striking watercolours.

She is survived by her sister Caro-John, children Cynthia (Gavin) and Alec, grandchildren Noa, Elli, Beau, Ava and Alistair, and nieces and nephews Victoria (Lance), Julia (Dave), Penelope and Ian.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Lunenburg at a date to be determined.
