It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Margherita Benigno, beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. Margherita, age 89, of Clayton Park, passed away peacefully at Hospice Halifax on November 27, 2025, with her family by her side.
Margherita Elisabetta Corsetti was born on April 11, 1936, in the town of Vestea, Abruzzo, Italy. She was daughter of Alphonso Corsetti and Palma Squartecchia. Margherita was predeceased by her husband, Leo Benigno, sisters Filomena (Liberato) Spensieri and Ida (Guido)Liberatore. She is survived by her loving sons, Adriano (former spouse Jennifer) and Carlo (Donna), as well as her brother, Franco (former spouse Linda) Corsetti, and sisters, Maria (Giovani) DiMattia, and Ines (Domenico) Sablone. Margherita is also survived by her grandchildren, Matteo, Angelo, Gabriel, Christian, and Stefano. She was the proud aunt of numerous nieces and nephews, and she will be remembered by extended family and friends who were an important part of her life.
Margherita immigrated to Canada from Italy in 1956, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax. In 1958, she married her husband Leo, who also immigrated to Canada from Italy. Over their extended union, they created a life for themselves and their children, while maintaining close connections with family, friends and the Italian community. Margherita became a Canadian citizen on December 7, 1966. Both she and her husband raised their sons to know the value of hard work and family. Margherita could often be found working in the family’s backyard, gardening and maintaining her flowers, especially her abundant roses that she loved so much. The family has fond memories of trips to the Valley for produce, blueberry picking, wine and sausage making. Margherita’s cooking was top notch, and the family will greatly miss her tomato sauce, her pastene, Christmas and Easter soups, Christmas sweets, “chichi”, and “Nini rice”.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to care provider, Marsha, whose constant presence was such a support over the past number of years. Marsha’s love of Mom was always evident. We would also like to thank the care providers at Hospice Halifax who took such great care of Mom during her final days.
Visitation will be held on Thursday December 4, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Lacewood Drive, Clayton Park.
