It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marguerite “Mimi” Flora McGrath, age 83, on July 1, 2018. Born and raised in Halifax, she was the youngest child of the late John Inglis and Blanche (Stuart) Inglis. She is predeceased by her brothers, Stuart and Delisle. She is survived by her beloved husband, Jack; her three children, Janet (Bill) Ivory, Dave (Karen) McGrath, and Paul (Susan Russell McGrath) McGrath, brother, Bud (Marina) Inglis, grandchildren, Nick (Caitlin), Kelsey, Sean, Jillian (Jamie), Andrew, Jennifer, great granddaughter, Rose and many nieces and nephews. Mimi passed away peacefully at home with her family at her side. In addition to her family, Mimi had many close friends who were an immense source of strength and comfort during her brief illness. Mimi graduated from Mount Saint Vincent College in 1956 where she made many lifelong friends. After graduation she entered the Maritime School of Social Work and worked at the Nova Scotia Hospital. While in her final year at the Mount, she met the love of her life, Jack McGrath. They have been proudly married for almost 60 years. This was so apparent by the heartfelt expressions of love and joy when Mimi came home from the hospital; there was not a dry eye in the room. She had a lifelong love of music, singing on CHNS radio in her younger years with her lifelong friend Sheila. She was a founding member of the Chebucto Community Singers and was a proud tenor for 45 years. Mimi was an accomplished pianist, being taught by her mother at the age of 8, and later becoming a piano teacher herself. Mimi was an avid tennis player; and played year-round until very recently. Her signature shot was a cross course drop shot, and she would do a little dance of joy when winning a point. Her spirit and love of life was evident with whatever she did, and wherever she went. She and Jack loved to travel and they visited many places over the years. Throughout her life and even during her final days, Mom’s interest in others meant that strangers soon became friends. Her greatest joy came from her family. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter with all her heart. She treasured her role as “Nana” and was very active in their lives. The grandchildren knew to watch out for Nana’s side shuffle, which usually ensued with a glass of wine in her hand. A heartfelt thank you to Mimi’s family and friends for visits, phone calls and emails. Words cannot express the family’s gratitude to Mimi’s special ‘brown eyed girls’ – you know who you are. She will be forever floating with her doves. Visitation will be at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, on Thursday, July 5 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. Funeral mass will be Friday, July 6 at 10 AM in Saint Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 6903 Mumford Rd, Halifax. No flowers by request. Donations in Mimi’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Mimi, we will miss you so very, very much. We have had so many happy times together on the tennis court two or three times a week and at various functions. We have known each other for at least 40 years. Jack we are sure will also be very sad, we hope that he will continue to play tennis with Derek. It is a sad time for your family, they are looking after Jack and have very much enjoyed the life that you helped to provided for them. I am very happy with Joy in our new situation and I am just sorry that you are no longer with us. But we can look back on the wonderful and happy times we have spent together in the past. The happy times at your summer home, with Jack taking us out on the lake in his boat.
Mimi was a wonderful person, we love her very much.

Dear Jack, Dave, Karen, Janet, Paul and family

What a beautiful obituary for such a beautiful person. You have done a wonderful job of capturing how very special she was right down to the “side shuffle”. I will always remember the sparkle in her eyes, the smile on her face, and the warmth of her welcome. My heart goes out to all of you. Share those many memories and keep each other close.

Dear McGrath family,

I was so sorry to hear about the loss of dear "Mimi". I have many memories of the McGrath family coming to Boston during the summer to visit my mother and father on the way to Nantucket. She was always full of life, energy, and spunk. She was such a devoted wife, mother, and Nana and will surely be missed by many. Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Dear Jack and Family,

It is with great sadness that I write this message. Myself and Foster knew Mimi through my in-laws (the Caines' from Fenwood Rd). I bowled with Mimi for a while many many years ago.

We ran into your Mom and Dad at the Blood clinic a few weeks ago and we talked for quite some time. When we went to our car they were parked almost beside us, so we chatted for another 20 mins or so. It was really so nice to see them.

Please know your Mom spoke so highly about her family and how wonderful you all have been to her and your Dad. You took great care of her.

Sending heartfelt condolences.

Dear Janet,

I wanted to let you know I was thinking about you during this difficult time.

It is hard to loose a parent at any age, but we certainly appreciate who they are, as we age ourselves.

The memories written in the obituary certainly demonstrate this love and reflection.

Please take care of yourself.

Dear Jack and family:

I was so shocked when Sheila told me about MiMi. I have known her since 1984 when I joined the Chebucto Choir and over the years we had some good time together performances, parties, choir trips, etc. I have also been playing bridge on Thursday afternoons and have enjoyed every lunch , the wine and, of course, the bridge.

I will really miss her and am so sad to know she won't be part of my life again, but the memories will be there for sure.

God Bless all of you. love, Deanna
