He will be missed by brothers-in-law Gregory Butler (Alison) Ross Creek, NS; Bernard Butler (Charlotte) Kingston, Ontario; and sister-in-law Bonnie Cuming, Port Williams, NS; as well as by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mark was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Barbara Cuming; parents-in-law, Judge Robert and Aileen Butler, sister-in-law, Denyse Butler and brother-in-law, Ian Butler.
Mark was born in Truro and grew up immersed in numerous musical experiences. Music became his lifelong passion and vocation. He was a talented composer and arranger under his preferred pen name, Kent Steerwell, and a multi- instrumentalist. He played in a variety of groups and ensembles throughout the years where he was affectionately known by many as “Otis”. Mark graduated from The Nova Scotia Teachers' College in 1973 and taught instrumental music at Amherst Regional High School for three years. While in Amherst, he was also employed as a weekend radio DJ. Mark then opted to further his musical education by attending Acadia University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education in 1978. For 30 more years, Mark was a band teacher in both junior and senior high schools in the Halifax region. He inspired countless students with his musicianship and unique sense of humour. Many of his students went on to pursue their own careers in music. In his retirement, he devoted his time and talent to the Halifax Concert Band as a player, conductor, writer and arranger. He will be deeply missed by the music community.
Mark was a devoted husband, father and granddad. He fully supported his family in all their pursuits and celebrated their accomplishments with enthusiasm and joy.
Mark also had an avid interest in aviation. He would often tune in to air traffic control frequencies to listen to the flight deck communications. He also enjoyed plane spotting photography, even having one of his photos displayed in the Halifax Stanfield International Airport boardroom.
He was very proud to follow his sons' careers in both civil and military aviation, paying close attention to all the places that their work took them and learning about the intricacies of flight operations throughout the world.
