

Mary Regina Ashe (nee Mantin) passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025 after a long and fulfilling life. She was born on September 13, 1927 in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Patrick Dennis Mantin and Ethel Rose Levy. She was a devoted wife, daughter, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mary grew up in the South End of Halifax and attended College Street School and St Patrick’s Girls High School. After completing her business course, she worked at Jack & Co Insurance before she was married. Later in life when her children were grown, Mary worked at Simpson’s and for the Nova Scotia Government. She was known for her intelligence, inquisitive nature, spirit, humour and love of travel. Her greatest joy in life was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also very proud of her children’s personal and professional accomplishments. Mary had many interests including being an avid gardener and knitter. She was a long time resident of the North End of Halifax where she raised her family. Mary was an active member of St Stephen’s Church and a good neighbour to all.
Mary is predeceased by her beloved husband of over 60 years William (Bill) Stevenson Ashe until his death in 2012. She is also predeceased by her parents, her sister Patricia (Luke Gravel), her brothers Donald (Eileen), Joseph (Corrie), William (Dorothy) and Dennis, and her brothers-in-law Luke Lucero and Tom Bradshaw. She is survived by her children Susan Pierce (Ottawa), Stephen (Claudette Bourgeois, Moncton), Elaine O’Neill (John, Ottawa), Paul (Gayle, Edwardsville, NS), and Maureen (Tony Crossman, Vancouver). She is also survived by her grandchildren Stephen Pierce (Kathleen, Brooklin, ON), Lauren Pierce (Shaya Ghanbar, Toronto), Karen Ashe (Justin Ellis, Ladysmith, BC), Kelly Ashe (Telsyn Doucette, Vancouver), William O’Neill (Kendra McDonald, Ottawa), Patrick O’Neill (Ottawa), Paula Condon (Rick, Niagara Falls, ON), Meaghan Hill (Mason, Coxheath, NS), Kyle Ashe (Airdrie, AB), Alex Crossman (Laura Chapple, Vancouver), and Sarah Crossman (Lewis Tanoyo, Melbourne, Australia). Mary is also survived by her great-grandchildren Allison and Ethan Pierce, Ava Ghanbar, Afie Doucette, Cormac and Calvin O’Neill, Emma and Olivia Condon, Owen and Oakley Hill, and Roe Ashe. Finally, she is survived by her sisters Joan Lucero (Williamsburg, VA) and Anne Bradshaw (Halifax). Mary was a beloved aunt to her many nieces and nephews on both the Mantin and Ashe sides of the family.
Mary’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Citadel Court Parkstone Enhanced Care. Thank you as well to Mary’s many friends and extended family who provided her tremendous support and care in the later years of her life. A funeral service and reception will be held later in 2026 in Halifax. Donations can be made in Mary’s honour to the charity of your choice.
