She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Don, children Karen; Sheilagh (Eduardo, Jaydon and Victoria), Oakville; Mark, Montreal; Robert (Shari), Calgary. Grandchildren Katie, Nick, Megan and Jacob. Sisters, Hannah English-Smith, and Mona Gillespie of St. John's, NL, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her infant son, David.
Effie earned her Masters of Continuing Education from Dalhousie and had a special place in her heart to assist new Canadian immigrants with furthering their language skills, as she was a volunteer with the Association for New Canadians and taught English as a Second Language.
The most important thing to Effie was her love and devotion to her family. She was a loving wife, mother, and Nana. Effie's children and grandchildren adored her with a deep abiding passion. She had a unique ability to make each one if us feel as though we were the most important one to her in the world. Her family meant the world to her and she was the quintessential Mother.
Effie enjoyed gardening her roses, playing bridge in various groups, cooking, baking, book club, annual summer visits to Newfoundland, and was past president of the Esso Annuitant's Club.
Effie was a devout Catholic and was a member of St. Benedict parish. She was past president of St. Lawrence parish council and longtime member of the Catholic Women's League. She served on the RCIA, Stewardship, Hospitality, Hope Cottage, and Good Samaritan committees.
Visitation will be held at St. Benedict's Church on Monday July 6th, 6-8 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at St Benedict's Church on Tuesday July 7th at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Mental Health Association.
The family wishes to thank the staff of 8.1 at the Halifax infirmary. The nurses took care of our Mom like they were caring for the own mother and we are so grateful for their kindness.
