Murray “Sedley” Barss passed away peacefully in Halifax on October 29, 2025, at the age of 95, following complications from vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Louisburg, Nova Scotia, he lived a full and vibrant life marked by curiosity, craftsmanship, and connection.
Born with a natural gift for fixing anything, Sed was a true handyman—equally skilled in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work. Whether with duct tape, super glue, or wire, he could always find a way. His talents extended far beyond the workshop: he was a gifted athlete, excelling in golf, bowling, and badminton, and was known for his competitive spirit and sportsmanship. Sed was credited with several “holes in one” over the years, a testament to his dedication and skill on the golf course.
His professional career spanned 38 years as a palynologist with the Geological Survey of Canada – Eastern Petroleum Geology. After retiring, he continued to contribute his expertise to a consortium of oil companies, compiling geological data from around the world to support offshore oil and gas exploration.
A passionate advocate for community living, he served as a director on the boards of two condominium associations and played a key role in shaping the new Condominium Act of Nova Scotia. His thoughtful input and leadership left a lasting impact.
Sed and Ann shared a life of adventure and companionship. Together, they traveled extensively across Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. In their early retirement years, they explored North America in motorhomes and fifth-wheel trailers before settling into a golf community in Davenport, Florida, where they spent 28 joyful winters. Summers were spent in Chester, Nova Scotia, where they were active members of the Chester Golf Club and cherished their time with friends and family.
He is lovingly remembered by his sons Robert (Lisa) and David (Kathy); grandchildren Jeffrey (Megan) and Andrea (Shane); and great-grandchildren Daniel, Aiden, Siena and Isla as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Edna (Horton), wife Ann (MacDonald), son Kenneth, brother Walter, and sisters Shirley, Alaire, Francis, and Aurora.
Sedley will be remembered for his warmth, ingenuity, and unwavering dedication to family, friends, and community. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the stories he leaves behind.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:00–4:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Thank you to the nursing and personal care staff at Bradford Hall, Stratford Hall and Moody Hall. Your care and compassion is much appreciated.
