

Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia he was the son of the late Frank and Rita (MacNeil) Martell.
Nelson graduated from St. Anne’s High School in Glace Bay. He spent 38 years with Nestle (Canada) retiring as Vice President, Atlantic Region in 1996. His work in the food Industry and the relationships he had were very important to him. He was a Founding Member of the Maritime Food Executive Club established in 1978. He was interested in sports as a young man, especially hockey and basketball and continued this passion throughout his life. He was involved in minor sports as a coach, referee and President of Fairview Minor Hockey Association. He participated in the development of a girls hockey league and was by far one of the biggest fans in watching his children and grandchildren play hockey, figure skating, baseball, soccer, dance and highland dancing.
“Herbie” as he was affectionately known by his family is survived by his wife, Bev (nee Vickers) of 55 years, his children, Gary (Julie); Darryl (Sharon); Denise Penny (Ian) and Karen MacDonald.
He is also survived by his sisters Estelle Reppa (Stan); Anne MacNeil (Julie), Rita Marshall (Robert) brothers, Calvin and Adrian (Joan), Brothers-in-law, Brian Vickers and Dave Rideout and sisters-in-law, Pat Rideout and Cheryl Vickers, and many nieces and nephews.
His legacy is his 10 grandchildren, Robyn Holownia (Kenny), Lauren (Marcus McPhee) Martell; Matthew and Jordan Martell; Ryan, Kaleigh and Meaghan Penny; Andrew, Hayley and Sophie MacDonald.
He was predeceased by his parents and sister-in-law, Carolyn.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Tuesday, July 26 at 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Funeral Service will be held at Saint Benedict Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 27th at 10:30 am located at 45 Radcliffe Drive. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia.
