With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend to many, Nick Eleftheros on Tuesday, March 17th, 2026 at the age of 89. Nick passed away peacefully at the Halifax Infirmary surrounded by family and loved ones.
Born in Anemodouri, Greece, on January 20th, 1937, Nick was the son of George and Costantina Eleftheros. Besides his parents, Nick was predeceased by his brothers Theodore (Panagiota) and Dimitrios (Soula) Eleftheros. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Panagiota; his children George (Catriona), Dina (Alex), and Mario (Danielle); his grandchildren who were the light of his life - Nick, Mia, Ana, Niko, Nickolas, Fabian, and Xander; and his sisters Garifalia (Louie) Tsavos, Nina (Yanni) Kamoulakos. Nick always had a special place in his heart for his many nieces and nephews by whom he will be dearly missed.
Nick immigrated to Canada at a young age to pursue a new life. He entered through Pier 21 and from there made Nova Scotia his home. He then settled in Halifax where he met the love of his life, Panagiota (Chonos). Together they built a life together and successfully owned and operated restaurants, most notably and famously Nick’s Place in Maritime Mall where Nick was known for his larger than life personality, sense of humour and great food.
Nick loved life and people. He never missed an opportunity to dance, never took things for granted, and enjoyed the simplicities in life. Nick was a notorious beach goer and sun bather, always rushing home after work to drive to “Pappou’s” beach or to lay out on his front deck. He was also known for his long daily walks home from downtown Halifax to Fairview where you would hear ongoing honks from passing cars to say hello. Nick loved his coffee buddies and could often be found in the Halifax Shopping Centre with his posse.
Nick loved his culture and was an active member of the Greek Orthodox Church and Community. He volunteered tirelessly for many events and could most often be found in the kitchen churning out delicious food with fellow chef and very good friend George Botas.
Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on Thursday, March 19th from 4:00 to 8:00pm. Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 20th at 1:00pm at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, 1146 Purcell’s Cove Rd with Father Panagiotis Maropoulos officiating. Burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery.
We would like to express a special thank you for the care and compassion provided by the amazing nurses and doctors of the Coronary Care Unit at the Halifax Infirmary. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church.
