Born in Halifax October 24, 1927, he was the elder son of Eli M. and Mary A. (Publicover) Noftle. He attended Chebucto Road School and Queen Elizabeth High School and graduated from Maritime Business College with a diploma in accounting. He received CMA designation in 1961 and at age 43, decided to go back to school. Despite 2 screaming kids at home and working full time, he enrolled at Dalhousie University and after 4 years, graduated with an MBA degree in 1975. At the time of his retirement in 1986, Otto was employed at Dalhousie University where he was Financial Comptroller.
He was a member of the CMA Society of Nova Scotia, the Commercial Club of Halifax, the Dalhousie University Club and Gyro International. An enthusiastic volunteer, some past roles include board member of the Metro Food Bank, treasurer of Northumberland Links Golf Club, and assistant coach for the Halifax area Special Olympics floor hockey team. As a longtime member of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, he served in many roles including member of parish council, warden and treasurer. He also had been involved in a variety of volunteer positions within the Anglican Diocese of Nova Scotia. April was always a busy month for Dad, and he would often continue his volunteering role by completing income tax returns pro bono for some lucky taxpayers.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was active as a spectator and participant throughout his life. In his younger years, he was an excellent basketball and baseball player and would tell you he “grew up on the Commons”. He was well known for his left-handed fast pitch. In mid-to-later years he was active in bowling and golf, and this continued for most of the rest of his life. He loved spending summers at the family cottage near Pugwash and especially enjoyed his **2** holes in one in the same week in 1994 at Northumberland Links! A good friend disguised his voice as someone from Sports Illustrated who wanted to interview him. Dad swallowed that one hook, line and sinker! He took many vacations with family throughout Canada, the US, Europe and Australia. Countless family memories were made during these trips, as Otto and Lorraine’s adult children would often “tag along”. Ever the accountant, we assured Dad that we’d pay our own way.
He was predeceased by his parents, both sister Norma and brother Eric in 2018, and his devoted wife of 66 years, Lorraine, in 2023. He is survived by his son Dr. Brooke (London, ON), daughter Leigh and son-in-law John Begley of Halifax and cherished grand-daughter Sophie Lorraine of Halifax. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia, Ontario and British Columbia.
Special thanks to the care team at The Stratford, Parkland Bedford West and to the incredibly compassionate end of life care team at Moody Hall, in particular nurses Brianna, Jesty and John. Thank-you also to Dad’s excellent physicians at both locations and to his previous long-time family physician Dr. Frank Doane.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Snow’s Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10 o’clock am Thursday October 23 at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, located at the corner of Kearney Lake Road and the Bedford Highway, Reverend Arran Thorpe officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. No flowers or visitation by request. Memorial donations may be made to St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Feed Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia SPCA or the charity of one’s choice.
