Paul Pan Hussain

Paul was born in Toronto on February 26, 1966, and made his home in central Halifax.

He is survived by his parents, Gloria Hussain and Syed Hussain; his sister and her spouse; his brother and his spouse; and many cousins, uncles, and aunts.

A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Paul cooked professionally and spent his life around food as a way of enjoying his first love, and also as a way of taking care of people. He planned meals the way other people plan trips. He also planned trips around his favourite meals.

A weeknight family dinner could be treated with a seriousness that was, depending on your view, either admirable or slightly ridiculous. He sketched out the courses in advance. He shopped for them. He cooked them, served them, and watched the table more than he ate. Multi-course dinners on an ordinary evening, for no occasion at all beyond the fact that everyone was coming.

That was the shape of him. Paul was happiest when someone else was enjoying something he had made, and happier still if they hadn’t seen it coming.

He liked helping people, and he liked watching them do well afterward. He did not make much of it, and he did not keep a tally. It was simply how he moved through the world: a fondness for people, and the assumption that the most useful thing he could do was be of use.

We are grateful to Emily, who cared for Paul over his final months, and whose kindness meant a great deal to him and to all of us.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, N.S. B3S 0E1, (902) 455-0531.

The service will be led by the family. A reception with food, tea, and coffee will follow at the funeral home, and all are welcome to stay.

The family will step away briefly for interment and will return to the reception to greet everyone. For those who cannot attend in person, the service will be livestreamed; the link is available through the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Paul’s name. And if you would like to do something he would have appreciated more: make yourself your favourite meal, and take your time with it.

Paul will be dearly missed.
