Peter Clement Petersen, known to many Haligonians as the upside-down clown who walked in the Natal Day Parade from the mid-60s to the 1980s, passed away August 12, 2013. He was 83. Peter was the son of Marius Sigurd Petersen and Anna Margretha Dorothea Clementsen (Dorothy), of the Faroe Islands. He attended LeMarchant Street School and QEH and went on to become a Chartered Accountant. He was an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Resurrection throughout his life, participating in the Luther League, choir and Sunday School, serving as an usher and supporting the church in many other capacities. He also volunteered for many years with Chebucto Links and looked forward to weekly visits to the Parker St. Food Bank to deliver food donations from the church. He was a spiritual man who loved woodworking, singing and laughter. He was so popular with the neighbourhood children that they would knock on the door and ask if he could come out to play, and on weekends he would often venture off along the railway cut with his children, or to Point Pleasant or to visit all his favourite hollow trees. As a younger man he loved to kayak and sail and row and snorkel, and as an older man he was rarely more content than when sitting under the dining room table having tea parties with his grandkids.
Peter is survived by his wife of 58 years Isabel (nee Rowe), daughters Kathi (Jamie Longmire), Wendi (Jeff Deeprose), Bonnie, Heidi (Antonio Bemfica) and Trudi (Greg Inglis), sister Marion Schomburg (Wilfried), brother Sig Petersen, sister-in-law Carol Grantham (nee Rowe), grandchildren Carlton, Danna and Anika Petersen-Deeprose, Felipe Bemfica, Capitu Petersen, and Shani Rose, Jacquelyn and Mitchell Inglis, and nephew and nieces Dan, Shelley and Nancy Grantham and Sharon and Kathy Schomburg.
The family wishes to send special thanks to the staff at the VG Palliative Care Ward and Unit 8.1 at the QEII and especially to Dwaine Campbell, his homecarer.
