Philip was born in London, England, the only son of the late Arthur Paul Peapell and Phyllis May (Gibbs) Peapell. He is survived by the love of his life and his best friend, Moira Jill (nee Monahan), the eldest daughter of the late Reverend Dermott and Margaret Monahan. He is also survived by his children, Mark Richard Lawson (Kathy) Peapell and Joanna Clare MacGougan, and by his grandsons Alexander (Megan), Samuel and Matthew Peapell. Philip is also survived by his youngest sister, Gillian Baird (brother-in-law Russell) and their children Amanda, Richard and David, and by his brother-in-law, John Stephens, and nephew Timothy. He was predeceased by his sister Patricia Stephens.
Philip proposed to Jill on her birthday in 1959, and they were married in London on July 2, 1960, a mere nine months later. To everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing them, their 65 years of marriage was happy in every sense. Whenever, Jill walked into his sight, Philip’s face lit with a smile. He often spoke of her with enormous pride and always with a smile, even during his last days in hospital, when he still referred to her as “my darling wife”.
Philip’s early education was seriously disrupted by WWII, and he finished his compulsory education from Alleyn’s School in 1952. He went on to obtain his Chartered Accountant designation in 1960 and was admitted as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). Years later, he became a Life Member of the ICAEW. Upon receiving his designation, Philip pursued a career in financial management at several firms in the UK - Abbott Laboratories, Cerebos, and Rank Hovis McDougall (RHM) - and in 1976, Philip and Jill, with their two children emigrated to Canada. Philip held a position with Gattuso in Montreal, Quebec until 1977, when the family moved to Halifax. Until his formal retirement in 1996, Philip held several senior appointments with the Province of Nova Scotia, primarily within the Department of Development. Upon retirement, Philip then joined Jill in a company she had established some years before (Supertemp/Peapell & Associates) and provided a financial support role that he continued until his death.
Philip’s passion for golf, cricket, soccer and rugby were well known among his family and friends, and he spent many long hours watching international matches. Until 2023, he was also an avid golfer and was a long-standing member of Ashburn Golf Course, where he was most proud when golfing with his three grandsons.
His funeral service will be held on November 13, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, with a reception to follow. There will be no visitation, and interment will be private. Donations in Philip’s memory may be made to the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation.
