Renee Lynn Barrett, age 69, after living fearlessly for eight months with a recurrence of melanoma, passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax NS . Predeceased by her parents, Ted and Mary Barrett of Brantford ON, she is survived by her children, Jessica and Jeffrey Shanks (Kristin Havill), granddaughters Laina and Kennedy, sister Deb Barrett (Jim Leech), former husband Kevin Shanks (Orla McDevitt) and her extended family from Ottawa and Vancouver.
Born in Toronto, Renee spent her early years in Brantford. She trained as an optician and in her early 20’s had the courage to pack up and move to Vancouver, where she met Kevin. Together, they moved eastward, with stops in Waterloo ON and Moncton NB, ultimately settling in Lower Sackville, NS. When their marriage ended, Renee and Kevin, and later with Orla, worked together as co-parents.
Professionally, Renee dedicated many years as a skilled and trusted optician at Bedford Eye Care. She was respected by colleagues and clients alike for her keen eye, gentle nature, and professionalism. Her career ended early because of a melanoma diagnosis, followed by Covid-19.
Renee was a woman of deep faith who found great strength, comfort and peace in her walk with Jesus. Her personal warmth and ever-present brilliant smile will be greatly missed by her family, Rock Church family, and many friends. Renee had a vast network of people (and pets) who cared about her, gathered from all walks of her life: childhood friends, neighbours, former colleagues and clients, and of course, her much loved dog, Georgia. She enjoyed the small moments in life, being with people, sharing a latte and having some laughs. Renee was a loving and involved grandmother and an active volunteer at her church.
A visitation (6-8 pm Friday October 17) and a service and celebration of life (Saturday October 18, 10 am) will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. The service will also be livestreamed. Memorial donations can be made to a charity of your choice or the Rock Church, Sackville N.S.
The family extends its great appreciation to the medical staff and caregivers at the many hospitals, facilities and care homes at which Renee resided since February. Your kindness will be forever remembered.
