Born in Hamilton, Ontario, the only child of Scottish immigrants Roy and Jean Candy, Bob joined the RCAF as a pilot in 1950. He married Christine Dawe of St John’s, Newfoundland in 1953, and started a family – Jean, Jill, and Rob. Stationed in Ottawa, Toronto, Trenton, and Montreal over the next 20 years, his favourite posting was as a training instructor in Old Sarum, in Salisbury, England, where he and Chris made many good friends and enjoyed many a good pub. In 1974, Bob was transferred to Halifax, and he retired from the RCAF in 1978, going back to school to earn a BA with honours from St Mary’s University. His next challenge was as executive director of the Atlantic Region Management Training Centre, developing and delivering seminars across the region for hundreds of supervisors. In retirement, Bob and Chris spent time cruising the Nova Scotia coasts in their yacht, High Flight, named after Bob’s favourite wartime poem. In the winters, they could be found in the Florida sunshine. Bob was an active organizer for the Conservative Party, and successfully advocated to establish the Mary Clayton Memorial Park in his local community in 2013. His final years were devoted to looking after Chris, who passed away in July 2021. Mum and Dad are sorely missed and will always be in our memories.
