Ron was a multi-talented man, equally at home navigating his way throughout a campground with his cantankerous tent trailer, embarking on a 6-week road trip with three small children, chatting with neighbours about weed removal, discussing the meaning of life with the market butcher, or gleefully belting out the words of Macho Man, much to the chagrin of his children.
Born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Ron was the adored only son of the late Carl and Helen Backman. Naturally curious with a drive to understand the world around him, he was never satisfied to rest on his laurels. Following high school, and feeling restless, Ron embarked on a journey of self-discovery across Canada on his motorcycle, searching for a way forward, and discovered it somewhere on the road. With new resolve, Ron returned to Halifax, attending Dalhousie University, and through years of dedication and study, eventually became a Clinical Psychologist. He began his career with the Atlantic Child Guidance Centre, later integrated with IWK Hospital for Children, earning his credentials as an expert witness in court along the way. Over time, he took the leap and started his own private practice which he continued to grow and develop, ultimately earning a prestigious award in recognition of his long-term commitment and outstanding work in the profession of psychology.
Ron strongly believed in giving back to his community. Over the years, he volunteered in many capacities, actively participating in local charity events, serving on the Parent Teacher Association, and taking on the role of president of the Rotary Club of Halifax. A lifelong advocate for health and fitness, you would often find Ron on the handball court at the Y, swimming during lunch at the Waegwoltic Club, canoeing in the nearby chilly lakes, trying to perfect his golf swing, and diligently working out at Goodlife fitness, lifting weights well into his 80s.
During the final chapters of his life, Ron embraced his new role as Papa and along with his beloved wife, travelled frequently to Australia, Florida, and Ontario to spend quality time with his family; teaching his grandchildren the intricacies of the perfect curveball, the ideal arc for throwing a frisbee on a windy day, the art of sculpting sandcastles, or finally sharing his family recipe for the perfect steak sauce.
Ron's last lap was spent comfortably at Oceanview Continuing Care Centre where he received kind and attentive care for which his family is deeply grateful.
Ron is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Backman (nee MacSween); his son Bruce of Adelaide, Australia; his daughters Pam (Roland Kirschner) of Toronto; and Karen (Derek Mason, d 2025) of Oakville, Ontario; and his nine grandchildren: Lucas, Sean, Miller, Avery, Erich, Isabel, Flynn, Bree and Max.
A most unique, intelligent and compassionate man, teacher, friend, husband and father, Ron will be remembered for his quiet wisdom, dry wit, and unwavering love for his family and community.
A memorial service will be on Monday July 7 at 2pm in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ron's memory may be made to St. Paul's Anglican Church, 1749 Argyle Street. Halifax, N.S. Canada B3J 3K4
