passing of Sadie Mary Toulany, who parted peacefully at home on July 7, 2023, surrounded by
family. To her family, she was everything. But her love extends throughout Halifax and Nova
Scotia.
Born in Karahbache, Lebanon, Sadie immigrated to Canada in 1953 by boat at Pier 21, at the
young age of 15, along with her mother, so that they may join her brother, Mike, in Halifax. She
loves to recount the story of how she arrived by boat - enduring a long journey, only getting
through it by prayer, wrapped in the arms of her mother.
Upon arriving, it wasn’t long before she lured the love of her life, Bashir Toulany, to the country.
They married on December 28, 1957, marking the beginning of a long generation of Toulanys to
leave their impact on this city, with their hospitality and unwavering sense of community to be
felt throughout. She worked tirelessly for over three decades in their small Toulany’s grocery
store on Gottingen Street, where there wasn’t a person whose life she didn’t touch and instantly
make feel like family.
Sadie is predeceased by her beloved husband, Bashir; her parents, Assaf and Tamini Kharma;
and her siblings, Mike (Kathy) Kharma; Debbie; Hanni (Waheeb); and, Tannous (Nazha)
Kharma. She is survived by her children, Saleem (Joanne); Samir (Antoinette); Carolann (the
late Saad Issa); Helen (Bernard) Renaud; and, Bashir (Alissar); and, her sixteen grandchildren
and nine great-grandchildren.
Sadie expressed her love through cooking. Most recently, she loved passing this passion on to
her grandchildren, who she would supervise in the kitchen as they prepared some of her
famous dishes, usually with their children running around in the background—memories we will
always cherish.
While kind and gentle, there was something that she was adamant about - there are no friends
in cards. She loved a good game of Basra, a traditional Lebanese card game. She was also
witty, humorous, and bossy - when she wanted to be and told her loved ones to always have a
strong sense of willpower.
Nanny (as she was often called), we promise to carry on your legacy and all of the lessons
you’ve taught us. Your wisdom is a rare and cherished jewel, which we are thankful for. Elvis
songs will forever hold a special place in our hearts. We will love each other, and hold each
other close, as you’ve done for us. Your great-grandchildren are fortunate to have felt your love
and warmth.
These are memories we will never forget. May you rest in peace. Always remembered, and
forever loved. Say hi to our Angels.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 12th, 2023, from 2:00-4:00 PM and 7:00-9:00 PM, at J.A.
