

Sam was employed by the Royal Bank for over 38 years. Sam began his banking career in 1955 as a junior in Shubenacadie, NS. He became an assistant accountant of that unit and was later transferred to North Sydney and Wolfville. He then came to Halifax as an accountant at Fairview Branch and then was appointed the first systems officer in the Atlantic District. He became assistant manager, loans Halifax main branch, followed by managers of both the Digby and Bridgewater branches. In 1980 he returned to Metro to assume the position of manager, lending services for Northern NS and Cape Breton area. He then became manager, retail lending for NS and NL Branches. In 1988 he was named manager, lending, the position from which he retired.
Sam was active in all communities where he lived. He was involved in Kiwanis clubs, Red Cross and Churches in which he held many different positions. He was a member of the Rockingham United Church and sang in the men’s choir. He enjoyed many sports: softball, bowling, golfing and curling. He was a member of the Oakfield Golf Course and the Mayflower Curling Club. He represented NS at the Canadian Seniors Curling in 1993 in Edmonton and in 1998 in Saskatoon. Sam enjoyed gardening and took enormous pride in taking care of his property. He was especially proud of his dahlia collection and many people complimented him on their beauty. He very much enjoyed wood working and made many beautiful pieces of furniture.
He is survived by his wife and best friend Marjorie of 54 years, daughters, Heather (Rod McGory) Sydney River; Pam (Ian Wood); Judy (Paul Kelly) and son Christopher (Kari Turner) Fort Collins, Colorado, grandchildren, Graeme and Jessica Wood, Nicholas and Benjamin Kelly, Samantha and Chase MacKay, sister Sue (Gordon Kent); brothers Jim (Eleanor), Markham ON and Myron (Diane) Charlottetown, PEI. Predeceased by brother, Victor Edmonton AB; sister-in-law, Eleanor MacNeil (Alvin) Cavendish, PEI; brother-in-law, Gerald Miller (Marion) Kelvin Grove, PEI and brother-in-law, Bradford MacArthur (Dianne), Kensington, PEI. Sam also had many nieces and nephews.
Donations in memory may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation or charity of choice.
Funeral services will be held on Monday August 23, 2021 at J. A. Snow Funeral Home at 2 pm. Please contact the funeral home if you would like to attend. Due to Covid restrictions a live video webcast of the service will be available.
