Sandra Elaine Kerr, age 78 of Halifax, passed away peacefully on October 6th after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Digby, she was the daughter of the late William and Pearl (Vidito) Franklin. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 57 years, Wendall; three beloved children, Jeffrey (Kathy), Windsor Junction; Stephen (Beth), Denver, Colorado; Andrea (Graham) Joy, Cow Bay; and six adored grandchildren: Michelle (Matt d’Entremont) Kerr, Stillwater Lake; Allana Kerr, Davis, California; Samantha and Brittney Kerr, Denver, Colorado; Bryn and Devin Joy, Cow Bay, Nova Scotia, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Claude and Avard; sisters, Helen, Doris and Hazel.
Sandra was a graduate of Digby Regional High School, Acadia University (B.Sc; B.Ed) and Mount Saint Vincent University (M.A. Educational Psychology). Prior to her marriage she worked as a research assistant for the N.S. Research Foundation in the field of Marine Botany. She was a stay at home mother while her children were small and then entered the workforce as a school psychologist for the Halifax County School Board for 20 years. In retirement she served on the Board of Directors of the Learning Disabilities Association of Nova Scotia for 14 years. She also found fulfilment as a volunteer for Feed Nova Scotia.
Sandra had a green thumb and a fondness for music and, as such, was equally happy in the garden or playing her piano. She also enjoyed hosting family dinners, playing cards with friends, knitting, and a glass of white wine. Sandra was always ready to share her warm hugs. She always had a smile waiting, and loved to share a good laugh. She was very grateful for the opportunity to travel over the years, one highlight being a memorable trip around the world in 1988 with Wendall. Above all, Sandra's main joy in life was her family. Her husband and soulmate, Wendall, and their children, are filled with immeasurable appreciation for Sandra’s unconditional and unwavering love, care, and support. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Palliative Care team on Floor 7A of the VG. Donations in memory of Sandra may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Visitation for Sandra will be held on Friday, October 12, 2018 from 6 pm – 8 pm and a Memorial service will be held on Saturday October 13, 2018 at 2 pm, both from J.A. Snow Funeral Home 339 Lacewood Dr. Halifax.
