Sarah Jean Barnhill

The family of Sarah Jean Barnhill announce her passing on September 27, 2026 at home in Fall River, Nova Scotia, following a lengthy illness. Born in Truro in 1972, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Helen (MacLeod) Barnhill.

Sarah was raised in the family home in Belmont and graduated from Cobequid Educational Centre in 1991. She went on to study at Dalhousie University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 1994 and a Diploma in Dental Hygiene in 1996. She later attended Saint Mary’s University, completing a Masters in Business Administration in 1999. She enjoyed a three-decade career as a dental hygienist and was much-beloved by her colleagues and her many patients.

Sarah is survived by her husband of twenty-five years, Martin Whynacht; son, Cameron; daughter, Rachel; loyal canine companion, Harvey. Sarah was a proud, loving and hands-on mother who always put her family first. She was elated to see Cameron graduate from Dalhousie University this year and begin his career as an engineer. She was a tireless advocate for her sweet Rachel, ensuring the best and fullest life that Rachel’s abilities allowed.

She is also survived by her brother Todd (Deb), nieces Amy and Laurel Barnhill; brother Jason (Amanda LeBlanc), niece Mary-Emma Barnhill and nephew Thomas Barnhill; sister-in-law Ann Mills (Pat), nephew Mike Mills and niece Sarah Spurrell; sister-in-law Beth Barclay (Thom), niece Kate Barclay and nephew Nick Barclay. Aunt Sarah was the anchor of family events, a great hostess and a legendary gift-giver.

Sarah quietly endured health trials over the years of which many people were unaware. She was proudly self-sufficient, pragmatic to her core and fiercely loyal. While we are all devastated to go on in our lives without Sarah, her rest is well-earned and we are all better for having been loved by her.

Cremation has taken place. Celebration of life will be held at JA Snow Funeral Home on Saturday October 3 from 6-8pm. Memorial donations may be made to Project CASK Canada (www.projectcaskcanada.com) or the charity of the donor’s choice.
