Sheldon MacDonald

It is with profound sadness that the family of Michael "Sheldon" MacDonald announce his passing on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the age of 66. He is leaving behind a family who loved him deeply and countless friends and colleagues whose lives were made richer by knowing him.

Sheldon was a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, respected engineer & leader, loyal friend, and passionate sports fan. He approached life with intelligence, generosity, quiet confidence, and a quick wit that could make anyone laugh. Whether offering advice to a colleague, cheering from the sidelines, preparing a meal for family and friends, or planning the next adventure with Michelle, Sheldon gave his whole heart to the people and things he loved.

Sheldon will be forever loved and deeply missed by his devoted wife, Michelle Dormody; his daughters, Katie MacDonald (Marquis) and Jessica MacDonald (Matthew); his stepsons, Scott Sheppard (Tara) and Jeff Sheppard (Sarah); his cherished grandchildren, Chevez, Keira, and Nova Fletcher, and step-grandson Eric Sheppard; his brother, Blair MacDonald; his nephews, Tyler, Matthew, and Blair MacDonald; and his sister in-law Myrna MacDonald (McIsaac); father in law, Eric Dormody; mother in law, Patricia Dormody, along with many extended family members, lifelong friends, neighbours, former colleagues, and those who considered him family through the many chapters of his life.

He was predeceased by his parents, John M. MacDonald and Leona "Ona" MacDonald; his brother, Kevin MacDonald; and his sister-in-law, Debbie MacDonald (Donovan).

Born and raised in Cape Breton, Sheldon graduated from Breton Education Centre in New Waterford, where he developed a lifelong passion for basketball as a member of the varsity team. He later earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics from Mount Allison University in 1981, and an Electrical Engineering Degree from the Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS) in 1983, beginning a career that would span more than thirty years and leave a lasting mark on telecommunications across Canada.

Sheldon joined MT&T in 1984 as a Microwave Design Engineer and steadily advanced through a succession of increasingly senior leadership roles with MT&T, Aliant Telecom, Bell Canada, Bell Aliant, and Northwestel. His career reflected not only exceptional technical expertise, but also the trust and respect he earned from those around him.

Throughout his career, Sheldon helped shape the evolution of telecommunications during one of the industry's most transformative periods. He played a significant role in the transition from analog to digital networks, helped guide the development of broadband technologies throughout Atlantic Canada, led the planning and implementation of DSL and mobility networks, and was instrumental in the expansion of rural broadband infrastructure. Later, as Vice President of Network Strategy & Engineering for Bell Aliant from 2012 to 2014, he led the teams responsible for planning and designing the FibreOP network, helping bring fibre-to-the-home technology to more than one million homes and businesses across over 150 communities. His vision, innovation, and leadership helped modernize communications throughout Atlantic Canada, creating infrastructure that continues to connect communities today.

Although Sheldon was proud of what he accomplished professionally, those who worked alongside him will remember him most for the way he treated people. He believed leadership meant supporting others, sharing knowledge, and helping people succeed. He generously mentored colleagues throughout his career, guiding them through challenges with patience and humility while encouraging them to reach their full potential. Many sought his advice long after working with him, and more than a few returned to the company because they wanted the opportunity to work with Sheldon again. His influence extended far beyond the projects he led; it lives on through the people whose careers he helped shape.

While his career was an important part of his life, nothing brought Sheldon greater pride than his family.

One of his greatest joys was becoming a father. His daughters, Katie and Jessica, were his world, and he never missed an opportunity to support them. Whether coaching Katie's baseball and basketball teams, cheering her on, or spending his evenings at Jessica's riding lessons - making friends (and perhaps a few enemies) with the horses along the way - he was always there. He celebrated every accomplishment, offered encouragement through every challenge, and remained their biggest fan throughout their lives.

Sheldon welcomed Scott and Jeff into his family with the same warmth, humour, and unwavering support. He and Jeff bonded over many football and basketball games, while Scott will fondly remember rounds of golf filled with playful banter - and the occasional shanked golf ball. Those moments of laughter, conversation, and simply spending time together became memories they will always cherish.

Later in life, Sheldon embraced being a grandfather with the same love and enthusiasm. He cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren, Chevez, Keira, Nova, and Eric. Whether watching Chevez play high school basketball or simply enjoying time together, being their grandfather was a special part of his life.

One of the greatest blessings of Sheldon's life was his marriage to Michelle. Together they shared a love of travel and adventure, exploring new places and creating countless memories along the way. Whether they were discovering somewhere new, trying new cuisine, or simply enjoying time together, those experiences became some of the happiest chapters of their life together. Their partnership was built on love, laughter, and unwavering support, and they truly enjoyed experiencing the world side by side.

Outside of work and family, Sheldon had many passions. Sports were a lifelong love. He enjoyed basketball, baseball, and golf, and remained a devoted Detroit Red Wings fan through every rebuilding season and every championship. When the Red Wings were winning, everyone around him knew exactly how good they were, because Sheldon made sure to tell them.

He also loved the camaraderie of friendly sports wagers with close friends, even if his annual Super Bowl coin toss prediction rarely went his way. Those traditions became stories that friends will continue to laugh about for years to come.

Sheldon was also happiest when surrounded by people he loved. He enjoyed cooking for family and friends and believed no guest should ever leave hungry. If anything, his only fault in the kitchen was never knowing when enough food was enough - there was always far more than anyone could eat, and that was exactly how he liked it.

Sheldon leaves behind a legacy that reaches far beyond the telecommunications networks he helped build. It lives on in the family he loved so deeply, the colleagues he inspired, the friends who cherished his humour, and the communities forever connected by his life's work. He will be remembered as a man of integrity, humility, kindness, and quiet strength - a husband who loved completely, a father and grandfather who never stopped showing up, a leader who lifted others, and a friend whose presence made every gathering better.

His absence will be felt every day, but the example he set and the memories he created will remain with all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A service to celebrate Sheldon's life will be held on Saturday August 1, 2026 at 2pm in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. There will be a time during this celebration for anyone that would like to share a story about a memory they have of Sheldon or how he impacted their lives to do so.
