It is with deep sadness, and with hearts full of gratitude for a life so well lived, that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Shirley Frances MacKenzie (White), on June 18, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on April 30, 1934, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Shirley grew up on Maynard Street, where she developed the strong values, wit, and determination that would carry her through life. In her younger years, she met the love of her life, Howard MacKenzie, and together they were married on July 13, 1953. Their partnership was one built on love, laughter, and devotion. In 1964, they made Fairview their home, where they raised their family and created a lifetime of cherished memories.
Shirley spent many years working at the I.G.A. on Dutch Village Road before retiring alongside Howard. Retirement suited them both perfectly. Whether they were spending time with friends and family, attending dances on the weekends, or enjoying the music of Newfie Fever, they embraced life together with enthusiasm and joy. If there was a dance floor nearby, there was a good chance Shirley and Howard weren't far away.
A lover of card games, Shirley especially enjoyed games of 45s and crib. She was one of the rare few who could proudly claim to have been dealt a perfect 29 hand in cribbage—a story she never minded telling more than once. Her quick wit, sense of humor, and ability to find joy in life's simple moments brought smiles to everyone around her.
Above all else, Shirley's greatest treasure was her family. Nothing made her happier than having everyone together, especially during the long May weekends spent at White Head. Her face would light up at the sight of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she cherished every visit, every gathering, and every opportunity to create another memory with those she loved.
Shirley leaves behind her loving children, Debbie (Jimi Rockola), Howard “Howie” (Patty), Charlie (Corina), and Ernie (Ruth). She will be deeply missed by her five granddaughters, seventeen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-granddaughters, all of whom brought immense pride and happiness to her life. She is also survived by her brother Jimmie (Donna), along with a niece and nephew.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Howard; her grandson, Nicholas; her mother, Catherine White (Cashen); her father, James F. White; her sister, Joan; and her brother-in-law, Maurice Cannon.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff on the 6th floor at Northwood on Gottingen Street for the care, kindness, and dignity they showed Shirley during her final years.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.jasnowfuneralhome.com.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 24, from 2:00–4:00 p.m. and 6:00–8:00 p.m. at J.A. Snow Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 25, at 10:00 a.m., with a reception to follow.
Interment will take place at Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Lower Sackville.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley's memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
Shirley will be remembered for her warm heart, her unwavering love of family, her laughter around the card table, and the joy she found in dancing through life with those she loved. Though she will be deeply missed, her family takes comfort in knowing that she and Howard are together once again, perhaps finding a dance floor somewhere and enjoying another song.
Her memory will live on in the stories, laughter, traditions, and love she leaves behind.
Forever loved, forever remembered, and forever part of every family gathering
