Stanley Bruce Outhouse

Bruce Outhouse, 78, of Halifax, NS, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on November 21, 1947, in Tiverton, NS, he was the son of the late David Outhouse and Beulah (Bower) Outhouse.

Bruce lived life to the fullest. He was a well-respected and accomplished lawyer and was passionate about his many hobbies and sports, including baseball, hockey, and golf. An avid outdoorsman, he could often be found wading the rivers in pursuit of Atlantic salmon or covering the fields with his beloved springer spaniels. That said, nothing meant more to Bruce than his family and his friends.

Graduating from Dalhousie Law School in 1971, Bruce spent 50-plus years building a legendary legal career. His contributions to the profession have been recognized across Canada and internationally. A partner at Blois Nickerson Palmeter & Bryson for the vast majority of his career, he retired from the firm at the end of 2022 and continued arbitration and dispute resolution. Bruce successfully resolved many high-profile labour disputes and appeared on numerous occasions before courts at all levels, including the Supreme Court of Canada. His career also included decades of distinguished work for the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board and for the Lawyer’s Insurance Association of Nova Scotia. His accolades and awards are too numerous to mention, but highlights include being inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers and being a member of the National Academy of Arbitrators.

Bruce also volunteered his time and talents over the years to benefit others, including time serving as; the President of the Scotia Springer Club, the Vice President of the Centennial Arena Board of Commission, and the President of Halifax Minor Baseball.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 57 years, Judith (Welch); his children, Ian (Kelly) Bower, Jacqueline (Robert) Funder, Aaron (Keri) Bower; his five cherished grandchildren; Brianne, Norah, Nicolas, Owen, Joshua; his siblings, Tony (Doreen) Bower, Roger (Dorothy) Outhouse; Helen (John) Ivens; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces / great-nephews.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the many friends, family, neighbours, and health professionals who provided support throughout his battle with pancreatic cancer.

A visitation will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, October 2, 2026, and a service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 3, 2026, both at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society or the Atlantic Salmon Federation.
