Susan was the cherished eldest child of Margaret and Everett Dickson. She spent her early years in Charlo, NB, on the shores of the frigid Bay of Chaleur, an oxymoron that never failed to delight her. She attended both St Thomas University (Bachelor of Arts) and St. Mary’s University (Bachelor of Education).
Susan began her teaching career in Dalhousie, NB at L.E. Reinsborough in 1975, then moved to Whitehorse with Sandy after their marriage. She taught there until they relocated to HRM in the early ‘80s, where she continued to teach until she retired. Her longest tenures were at Beaver Bank-Monarch Elementary and Ash Lee Jefferson Elementary, both communities that she cared for deeply.
Susan had many loves, and she loved them passionately. Her husband Sandy. Her treasured daughters, Lauren and Sarah. Son-in-law, Ben, and grandson, Harrison. Singing. Singing. Singing. Leading school musicals to instill the love of singing in those she taught and mentored. Bruce Springsteen. Her Camero and her Prelude. Patrick Swayze. Il Divo. Laughing. Travelling.
Susan gloried in her busy life of service: a rewarding career, raising two rambunctious and active children, singing in St. John’s United choir and The Bedford Singers, volunteering for St John’s United Church and other community organizations, engaging with friends, honing her voice with regular voice lessons, and managing their long-time family home in Waverley, NS.
Susan is survived by her daughters Lauren (Ben Steeves) and Sarah, grandson Harrison, sister Debbie (Donnie Benson) and brother David Dickson (Suzanne Haché). She will be greeted by many who loved her dearly, her parents Margaret and Everett Dickson, husband Sandy, and chosen family, long-time neighbour and church community member Barb Stewart.
She will be dearly missed by her siblings-in-law, Pat, Martha and Mark Hutton, as well as by her niece, Lesley Benson (and family) and nephews, Peter Hutton and Matthew Benson (and family).
The family would like to sincerely thank the caring teams supporting Susan’s health over the recent years including the staff at Parkland (Clayton Park and At The Lakes), Dartmouth General Orthopedics, Melville Lodge, and Maplestone Enhanced Care. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest that if you would like to remember Susan with a donation, that you consider the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada or Beacon House Nova Scotia.
There will be a Celebration of Life held at St John’s United Church in Fall River, Nova Scotia on Thursday, October 29, 2026 at 11:00 AM with a reception to follow.
