Born January 11, 1930 in Moncton, NB she was the daughter of Beulah (Morris) and Hilliard Graves living most of her life in Halifax, NS attending schools and participating in many sports throughout her younger years. Wanda continued her love of sports while working for telephone companies in Halifax, Vancouver, BC and Saint John, NB playing on the company teams.
Wanda returned to Halifax in 1950 where she met and married her husband of 53 years Bryce Burgess. She loved being a homemaker and together they raised seven children. Wanda made sure there were at least two major family parties every year. This was important to her so her family would stay close and connected. She raised her seven and then babysat most of her eighteen grandchildren until they were ready for school. This she regarded as a privilege and referred to them as her “Angels”. Wanda and Bryce did not have a retirement as the family business, Burgess Transfer and Storage Limited, kept them busy. They did some traveling with business and some for pleasure.
Wanda also enjoyed time at the family farm in Old Barns, Colchester Co. and was the ultimate hockey mom with all 5 sons playing the game. Her girls came at the end and brought her much joy, lots of dolls, cooking lessons, figure skating and gymnastics. Wanda was a member of the I.O.D.E. and she held several offices. She played bridge with devoted friends for over 40 years. She participated in Burgess Transfer in as many ways as she could and was always the “velvet glove” who smoothed the bumps along the way. She loved and was very proud of her family. She was an artist and spent many hours painting and writing poetry.
Wanda was predeceased by her husband, Bryce; sister Peggy Peck and daughter-in-law, Cheryl England. She is survived by her brother, Zen Graves, Dartmouth; sons, Larry (Cheryl) Enfield, Scott (Nancy) Ingramport, Ken (Linda) Halifax, Graham(Cathy) Halifax, Dan (Janet ) Old Barns, her daughters, Diane VanNorden (Tony) Hackett’s Cove and Leslie Barr, Tantallon, grandchildren, Ben, Anna, Ike, Allie, Sam, Tori, Evan, Mike, Greg, Brandon, Laura, Stephen, Pat, Andrew, Kiefer, Roman, Bryce and Olivia and 8 great grandchildren.
All are welcome to attend a Memorial service that will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax, NS, on Saturday, November 19, 2016, from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm. A private family burial will occur at Old Barns United Church Cemetery the following day. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the VON.
