William Richard Legge, P. Eng., of Halifax, NS passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital January 30, 2024. Richard was the oldest child of Gordon and Marcella Legge of Cartyville Newfoundland. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Nancy, and his siblings Trevor and Gladys. He is survived by his sisters Elizabeth and Janet, his brother Eric, his children Julie Ann Dugie (Daniel), Daniel Gordon (Cindy) and William Donald (Mila); his grandchildren Matthew, Brian, Anna, Robyn, Ellen, Thomas, Bob; and great grandchild Everett.
Richard graduated from Nova Scotia Technical College in 1960 with a degree in Electrical Engineering enabled by time-served in the Royal Canadian Air Force where he worked as a supply officer and spent time in Germany in the late 1950’s. Richard began his 33 year career with the phone company at Bell Canada in Montreal and spent the majority of his career with Maritime Tel & Tel in Halifax retiring in 1993 as a Supervising Engineer.
Richard spent his childhood growing up on his family’s multigenerational farm on the west coast of Newfoundland. He left home at an early age for military service and education. During that time he met the love of his life, Nancy Baird. Together they had three children, the oldest Julie, then Dan and the youngest, Bill. Richard made it a priority to often take his young family back to Newfoundland to enable them to develop a strong family bond and a love for his home province.
Staying true to his farming roots he spent many hours in his backyard vegetable garden. He became a proficient wine hobbyist and was always ready for a family game of cards. Richard took great care to ensure his family lived comfortably. His children were fortunate to spend their summers at the Waegwoltic Club and exploring Halifax Harbour in their family boat. As grandparents, Richard and Nancy were very involved with their beloved grandchildren. They also loved to play golf after retirement and shared many happy days on the nine-hole courses of NS, NB and PEI.
Rest in the peace you so deserve, our beloved father, grandfather and friend. Our hearts will carry you with us always.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Celebration of Life service will take place Tuesday, February 13 at 10:00 am at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Reception to follow.
