It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Zarin Bhathena, beloved wife of the late Behli Bhathena, devoted mother and grandmother, sister, cherished friend, and pillar of her community.
Zarin’s life was defined by warmth, service, and an unwavering connection to both her heritage and her community in Halifax. As a caring mother and grandmother, she poured her heart into raising and guiding her children and grandchildren, especially in the lives of Liam and Jasmine, who carry her legacy forward with pride.
Proudly rooted in her Parsi heritage, Zarin was known throughout Halifax and beyond as an exquisite and gracious host. Her kitchen was a place of generosity and welcome, where culture was preserved through the taste of Parsi batasas and her traditional mint and lemongrass tea. She was a woman of many talents—an imaginative tailor, craftsperson, and gardener, as well as a source of comfort, guidance, and trust for her family and friends. She delighted in social gatherings, where her lively spirit and genuine interest in others made her a natural connector. Her love of adventure carried her around the world, from Asia—Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and India—to the Caribbean and Western Europe, where she embraced cultures, experiences, and friendships that broadened her life.
Zarin was a true bridge between India and Halifax, embodying the spirit of connection and cultural exchange. She devoted countless hours as a community volunteer, from her early support of the Girl Guides to offering translation support for families during the events of 9/11 and assisting with Indian fundraisers. Her teaching of the Zoroastrian faith was one cornerstone of her service, nurturing spiritual understanding and preserving traditions for younger generations.
Zarin’s passing leaves a deep void, but her memory will live on in the countless lives she touched. She is remembered with love by her sons, Mahiar (Armaity) and Firdaus (Jennifer); her cherished grandchildren, Liam and Jasmine; her brothers, Behli (Roda) and the late Fili (Nergish); her nieces and nephews; many wonderful family friends; and the countless friends and community members who had the privilege of knowing her.
Zarin will be remembered as a woman of grace, resilience, and generosity. Her legacy is one of love, faith, and community, which will live on in all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
I lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the QEII Foundation.
