Today, my son Richard saw a memory pop up on his phone — a picture of him and Max. I thought it was such a beautiful coincidence, especially since today marks three years since Max’s passing. It felt like a little sign that he’s still with us. 

Holding Max’s family in our hearts today and sending love to everyone who continues to cherish his memory.

I dated max for a few months in 2021. He was always so happy and lovely to be around. he always stuck his neck out for me even when it was inconvenient. I just found out this awful news and wanted to wish my condolences to his family and other friends. He always had a soft spot in my heart. I hope he’s resting easy. I love you Maxie 💗

Max  was a sweet boy with a sparkle in his eye, a spring in his step and a joyfulness that was always apparent whenever we greeted each other as neighbors on Carroll Street. We lived next door to Max on Carroll Street during his final years in high school and I was proud and excited for him as he headed off to Chicago for college. Max was. Using the past tense to refer to my sweet, beautiful, big-hearted nephew is still jarring and shocking nearly a week after he left us way prematurely.

Max was loving life. In a phone conversation he and I had a few days before he departed, he sounded happy and optimistic. He was enthusiastic about his new girlfriend and texted me five pictures of her--a slender pretty blonde. I noted that she was a shiksa and was just his style. We both laughed. He told me he got a 98 and a 95 on his first two midterm exams and he was studying for the others. As we spoke, he popped into a Starbucks to order some exotic mocca schmocca concoction at his favorite coffee spot. 

Max said he was looking forward to being at our house for Thanksgiving, when he'd reunite with his six Walzer cousins–Fabiola, Ariel, Danny, Juliet, Jackie and Sofia, as well as fiance Bala–who all love him so.

Over the years, Max was overjoyed to visit his older cousins. I can still hear his young, high-pitched voice excitedly yelling, “COUSINS, COUSINS” as would arrive from Brooklyn with his loving parents, Janis and Larry. He’d run to them with open arms and be met with enveloping hugs. For me, the father of three daughters, Max was like a son I never had.

Max got his first name from his maternal great grandfather Max Walzer, who was born in 1894 in Meilnitzer, Austria, near present day Lviv, Ukraine, and lived in Brooklyn. More than a century later, the name Max became fashionable again in Brooklyn.

Max had aspirations. He wanted to be a businessman. He told his Aunt Ana that he was going to be rich, take her on a first-class vacation once he made it and joked that he’d buy a Gucci belt buckle. Max was eager to advance those dreams by returning to Loyola University in the fall for his sophomore year, where he had some wonderful friends and a life in an exciting city far from his troubles in New York.

Having the earth shift under us as we fall into an endless well of grief. It has no bottom, no air, and noone can reach us and nothing can make the world seem right or fair.
I'm so deeply sorry for your loss. I want to tell you things will get better, but I don't know if it's true. I do think that now is a time to cling desperately to our family and trusted friends as we sit with the dissonance in our souls.

Max was such a special person. He was one of the first people I connected with when I came to Loyola. He made my first few weeks in chicago so special. He made everything more exciting and fun. He  never cared what people thought of him , he was always 100% himself, and I admired that about him. He really was always smiling, I could not be sad around Max.  I will never forget the short time I had with him.  My deepest condolences to his family and friends. 

From the time he was a child, every time I saw Max he was almost translucently bright - happy, kind, curious, and funny. So funny. He was a special person who made the world a better place and he leaves a huge void. I understand that many have asked how they could make a donation in Max's memory. I had just met Max during our first year at Loyola. He was generally quiet, respectful and was just so kind. He was such a happy ambitious soul, making the best of the college experience like the rest of us. I am glad to have met such a genuine person. My prayers go out to anyone and everyone who loved Max.

I was in advisory with Max during high school.  He was always one to crack a joke, never seeming to take anything too seriously, but just having fun, enjoying himself and his friends.  Whenever I’d see him around the neighborhood, whether he’d be with family or friends, he’d be having a good time, and always took a moment to smile and say hello.  I always appreciated that.  Max always seemed so happy, and surrounded by people who loved him.

We cherish our memories of the elementary school years with Max. He and his parents were always up for an adventure and we had such happy, lovely times. Max’s joy was irrepressible. Seen here walking on a nature preserve in NJ.

We are deeply sorry for the loss of your beloved Max.  We are saddened and have such fond memories of the boys from the elementary school days and the laughter and giggles they shared together then.  We will always remember Max being so full of light - he was a special boy and I am sure he had grown into a beautiful young person. My family and I have the most beautiful memories of Max.  Max spent time with my son during his tween  years. They would venture out to the zoo. Go to indoor sports arenas and play soft air ball all the time.  I loved Max so much (parent) that one day  I got him an Apple Watch.  I will never forget how happy and grateful he was.  I loved Max very very much and will miss him immensely.  A real sweetheart that will be for ever missed but will be near and dear to my heart always.  Rest In Peace my little sweetheart.  You will be forever missed.  God bless you
