To the Green family - I want to express my deepest sympathies for your unimaginable loss.  McLane was a rare breed - friendly, athletic, intelligent, kind and an endless list of fine qualities that always made him enjoyable to be around.  I have so many fond memories of playing sports together when we were younger and our family is just devastated he was taken from us too soon.  I know heaven has gained a new tennis star and wish you immense strength and comfort during this difficult time.

By most definitions, Mclane was my brother. His sisters are my best friends and sisters, and his family is my family, and I have known him since he was a baby. Like others, I remember the little boy, known as "the boy," in a leather jacket and jeans running around Merrick, AND Atlantic Beach, AND Cedarhurst. My mom had a tiny Christmas tree in our living room that she called the Mclane tree, and filet mignon reserved for him on Christmas Eve. He was our little prince.

He was a 5th wheel among me, my sister Danielle, my cousin Jolie, and Lindsey and Chelsey through thousands of sleepovers, dinners, concerts, trips into Cedarhurst, and trips between our houses, just two blocks apart. Our memories are too vast and too precious to list here, but there is a shorthand between us and we could laugh over nonsensical references from 40 years ago, argue about who had a crazier mother, and also say nothing for hours. When Mclane was 3, I remember him in the backseat on the bridge looking at the smoke pipes, and he said, "So that's how they make clouds." From then on I knew he was a clever kid who always thought outside the box.

Knowing him, he would think anything we say was silly and too much, and he'd be far more worried about his dogs; always with the dogs. The one thing I know we can do to make Mclane happy is to help or save a dog, or send money to animal charity. 

He once wrote to Chelsey in an impromptu obituary that if his plane went down, "Feel bad for yourself. Don't feel bad for me." That encapsulates him quite well, but also us and how we feel now. We are a mess. I know he knew how much we loved him. But still...

Passing our hearts are broken from deep within for your family and honestly, I know there are no words that can express the profound sadness that I know your family is walking through at this time , just know  we are walking with you. You are in our heart ,thoughts and prayers , We love you so  very much. I have thought about the times our families have spent together, Lindsey Chelsea & McLane New Year’s Eve in Atlantic City and  Florida  with our children and the many memories we all have together with your family. Memories of you and I with our baby bellies you waddling through the hotel  pregnant with McLane and I with Rhema . McLane will continue to be a part of us all we will carry him in our heart forever . The  Bernard  family wants you to know how much we love you all and will be here for you in anyway we can be.

I can’t believe I’m writing this about one of my oldest friends. Atlantic Beach was our playground, and boy did we rock and roll. We shared more memories than I could ever capture into words.

What I can say is Mclane was dependable, generous, gracious, witty, smart, loyal, and so much more. 

He was always living his best life. He was a walking lifestyle category before the world even had one. Simply put, he was the definition of cool.

When Mclane accepted you into his circle, you knew you had made it—and with that came the gift of a friend who would do anything for you.

I’m forever grateful that I had the chance to stand beside him and watch a legend live life.  My heart breaks for Holly, Paul, Chelsea, Lindsay, AB Nation, and everyone fortunate enough to know the real Mclane.

There will be a huge void now on our stretch of beach—his spot, every weekend, always the same, always there. Just knowing I won’t see him holding a kadima paddle, calling me over for “just one rally,”, and telling men“just don’t mess up” it hurts in more ways than I can explain.

Though our last kadima rally here may have ended, I know I’ll see him again someday—paddle in hand, that smirk on his face and ready to break our all-time hit count like nothing ever changed.

Because that was McLane: always up for the next round, always making it fun, always keeping the rally alive.

Legends never die. They just switch courts.

Ever since learning of McLane's illness, up until hearing of his passing, I have felt a pain in my heart. McLane was a big part of our family for many years, and then remained connected to us through Archie. It says so much about who he was that he chose to keep us in his life. I always looked forward to his texts and pictures he'd send from time to time of adorable things the doggies were up to. He even gave me visiting rights :-) While for me McLane was an acquired taste, like a fine wine or a top top shelf scotch, once you came to appreciate him, you realized just how special, kind, and loving he was. I feel blessed and honored that he kept in touch until he no longer could.  We are devastated over this untimely loss and words cannot express how deeply sorry we are for what the Green family is going through. May his memory be a blessing.

I am struggling to find the words. And maybe that is because words could never do Mclane or how I feel about him justice, but I want to try. From the moment we met, I was completely enamored with him. He had the most natural essence of cool I’d ever experienced. The kind of cool people only dream of being. Mclane was born with it. He made it his mission to open my eyes to the best things life could offer. The best restaurants, the best movies, the best clothes, the best jewelry, the best tennis rackets, the best jokes… all the way down to the best brand of hand soap. But it wasn’t just about the material things for Mclane. He genuinely loved doing life in the highest quality way. He lived exactly how he wanted to live each and everyday. I feel lucky to have been in his world for as long as I was. Mclane didn’t open his heart very often, which made it that much more special when he did. I was in love, but not just with Mclane, with his whole family. I am heartbroken for them and for all of us who had the incredible honor of knowing him.

I remember how much Lindsey and Chelsea adored him when we were kids. How excited they were to see him every visiting day. Much love to your family during this difficult time.

McLane will be in our hearts and thoughts always. He was kind, talented, intelligent, gifted and charming. 
While there are no words to express the sadness so many are feeling  I hope in time we can all try to emulate those qualities we most admired in McLane- including his ease with people, his graciousness and ability to make others feel comfortable and valued!

McLane was one of the first new friends I made when I went to Middle School from elementary school. I have too many memories to count with him. I wish there was time for more. I’m so deeply sorry for his loss.

McClane always had a safe space for us to hang out laugh, vibe and have a good time, growing up. He was a guy that was about his style and being a cool person, inside and out; exactly what his persona was. I haven't spoken to him in years, but the last time, like every other, it was genuine and I wish I did check in with him. Mclane was a great friend to everyone around, and he had friends everywhere. The one word I think would describe him best is quality. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. McLane was one of my most favorite friends, and I loved him so much. He had the kindest heart and the coolest, sweetest way of making everyone around him laugh and feel good. I’ll never forget the beautiful wedding blankets he made me, or how he always brought such light and joy to every moment we shared.

Some of the best memories of my life are with him—the parties at your house, weekends on the balcony playing video games and being silly, driving his M3, him ruining my eBay account to buy endless sneakers, prank calls, and nonstop laughter with the best crew of friends ever. Everything with McLane was just the best.
