

Born on July 18, 1942, in Canton, MS, to Cecil and Florence (Jones) McClendon, Cecil graduated from Roosevelt High School in Gary, IN. He went on to attend Bethune-Cookman College, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree, and later obtained his Master’s degree +30 in Counseling.
Cecil served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he became an entrepreneur, owning and managing the Zodiac Club, working as a real estate broker and landlord, and dedicating himself to education. He taught Biology and Chemistry at Roosevelt High School, and later served over 20 years as a Guidance Counselor at Chase Elementary School before retiring.
Throughout his career, Cecil also coached Track and Field, a sport he was passionate about. He was a proud member of Omega Psi Phi and was well known for his love of golf.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Berneda E. (Lewis) McClendon; his children, Michael, Earle, Stephanie, Kasia, and Jeffery; grandchildren, Michael (LaQuita, wife), Lion, Jett, Myles, Ming, and Jordan; great-grandchild, Sanoa; and siblings, Lafayette (Rabbit), Tyrone, and Cheryl.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Florence (nee Jones) McClendon; and siblings, Jean (Sweet), Mary (Gold), Patrick (Pat), and Juyrome.
Cecil will be remembered for his sense of humor, wit, athleticism, and his self-discipline to get things done. He was an avid sports fan and golfer, having earned numerous awards in track and field during high school, including a state championship his senior year. He received a football scholarship to Bethune-Cookman, where he had tremendous success and garnered several accolades. His life reflected a deep commitment to education, entrepreneurship, and community.

A visitation to celebrate Cecil’s life will be held on October 28, 2025, from 1:00 PM until the memorial service at 3:00 PM, at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road, Highland, IN 46322.
