Born on August 13, 1949, in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania to Sam and Ethel Tulowitzki, Don lived a full and meaningful life, shaped by the many places he called home and the countless roles he embraced. He grew up in Clearfield, PA, attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, and built a life with his family in Munster, IN, and later Crown Point, IN.
Throughout his life, Don played many roles: a devoted son, grandson, uncle, nephew, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He was a Little League All-Star shortstop; a piano student for 10 years; a girls’ soccer coach; a Junior Achievement leader; a Chicago Science Fair Judge; and an enthusiastic tax preparer. He was valedictorian of the Clearfield Area High School Class of 1967, a Bethlehem Steel summer intern, and a Lehigh University undergraduate.
He went on to earn a Master’s degree in materials science from Northwestern University, advancing his career as a Metallurgist and Technical Representative at Inland Steel that spanned more than 30 years.
Beyond work, Don actively pursued his many interests. He lived out his passion for the stock market and investing as a founding member of the LYRIC Investment Club where he served for 25 years in many roles, including treasurer.
For Don, golf was a way of life. He served as a marshal at the U.S. Open, was secretary of a senior golf league, and realized his remarkable lifetime goal of playing golf in all 50 states. He even achieved something that few golfers ever do – a hole in one! He was a lifelong learner who always rooted for the underdog and sought to make those around him better.
At the center of Don’s life was his precious wife, Karen. High school sweethearts since they met sophomore year at Clearfield High, they shared six decades of love and partnership. Together they raised two children, Julie and Steve, and created unforgettable memories on their family vacations throughout the US. Whether exploring the famous “rocks and water” of our national parks, taking must-do trips like Disney World, visiting California, camping in Michigan, or their favorite spot for family reunions, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, traveling with Don, aka, “Touring with Tulo” was anything but boring.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Karen; his children, Julie Tulowitzki and Steve (Celine) Tulowitzki; his grandchildren, Zoe and Lana Tulowitzki; his sister, Kim (Kerry) Leib, and many nieces, nephews, and friends who will cherish his memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you share a memory of Don with them.
A public visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm at Kuiper Funeral Home, located at 9039 Kleinman Road, Highland, IN 46322. A memorial service will begin at 2:00 pm, followed by cremation according to his wishes.
