

Henry “Hank” Schoon, age 93, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2015. Henry is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Virginia (nee Noordewier) Schoon; son James (Joan) Schoon; daughter Annelle (Ken) Baker; seven grandchildren: Brian (Jennifer) Baker, Jennifer (Casey) Veersma, Kim (Scott)Saindon, Jason Schoon, Jonelle (Jason) Carns, Jeanette (Jeremy) VanGenderen, and Jana Hall; Nineteen great grandchildren; brothers: Dr. N. Lou (Jan) Schoon and John (Darlene) Schoon; sister Estelle (late Herb) Ooms. He was preceded in death by sister Sadie (Ed) Meidema and his parents Nicholas and Nell (nee Groot) Schoon.
Henry was a decorated World War II veteran. He was privileged to participate in Honor Flight Chicago with his son in 2013. He was the proud owner of Schoon Supermarket in Highland for many years before becoming a butcher at Strack and VanTil in Merrillville. He was born on September 30, 1922 in Highland, IN and graduated Chicago Christian High School in 1940. He resided in Highland with his wife for 63 years before retiring to Village Woods in Crete, IL. Henry was an avid reader, golfer and enjoyed water sports. He fondly recalled traveling with his wife and many fishing trips to Canada with friends and relatives. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He served many years as a Gideon, was an elder and very active in Second Highland Christian Reformed Church (New Life).
Viewing will be at Kuiper Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Rd. Highland, from 4-8 PM on Wednesday, November 11. Friends and family service celebrating Henry’s life will be held at New Life Church, 3010 Ridge Rd, Highland, on Thursday, November 12 at 11:30 AM with Pastor Bill Sytsma officiating.
