Charlie W. Hammer, age 90, passed away on April 14, 2026. Born March 26, 1936, in Siler City, NC, he carried with him a steady devotion to the people and places he loved throughout a long and meaningful life. A graduate of NCSU, Charlie approached each season of life with quiet purpose, a thoughtful spirit, and a work ethic that never sought attention, only results.
Charlie served as a Lieutenant in the US Army and was stationed in Natick, Massachusetts. After his military service, he built a career marked by consistency and diligence in textile manufacturing, including many years with Carlton Yarn Mills in Cherryville, North Carolina. Later, after coming to Chattanooga, he was employed at SCT Yarns, retiring in 1998. In every role, Charlie was known for the kind of dependable, hard-working presence that strengthens a workplace and earns lasting respect.
A man of faith, Charlie was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church. He also valued fellowship and community, and he was a member of Valley Brook Golf Club—an especially fitting place for someone who found genuine enjoyment in time spent outdoors and in good company.
Charlie loved to golf, saltwater fishing, and traveling in the motor home. Those who knew him best will remember the generous way he shared his time and attention, and the care he took in the simple moments that become, over the years, a family’s most treasured memories. He will always be remembered walking his dog, April with a smile on his face around the Everlan/ StoryPoint community. Charlie adored his family and loved spending time with them, especially spending time with Eric and LeeAnn, Jarred, Daniel and Lauren.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Kathleen and Newby Hammer; son, Gregory M. Hammer; sister, Mary Frances Hall and his brother, Donald E. Hammer.
Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Milli Hammer; son, Eric (LeeAnn) Hammer; grandchildren, Jarred and Daniel Hammer, Brittany (Stephen) Rollins , Lauren (Kellen) Shaffer and Haley Hammer; great-grandkids, Nora, Elijah and Zoey Rollins, Arthur and Rory Shaffer.
Charlie’s life reflected steady faithfulness, deep thoughtfulness, and a generosity that was felt most clearly by those closest to him. He will be remembered with respect, gratitude, and enduring love.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
