

Garry was born in Chattanooga on January 10, 1948 to the late Robert and Nellie McNutt. Garry was a graduate of Central High School and then went to serve our country in the United States Army where he collectively served over 20 years which included service in the United States Army National Guard. Garry served several tours overseas in the Middle East during Operation Desert Storm. While serving in the Middle East Garry was stricken with a lung disorder as a result of exposure to burning oil fields.
Garry received a Bachelors Degree in Education and taught at numerous locations throughout the Chattanooga area, most notably his Alma Mater, Central High School. Gary also served as a coach at many of these schools. He helped coach Track, Basketball, and Football. He was active in the Alumni Association of Central High School for many years. After he finished teaching he went on to work with the DMV and Amazon. He and his wife Phyllis were long time members of Lupton Drive Baptist Church.
Garry was preceded in death by his aforementioned parents and a brother, Bobby McNutt.
Left behind to cherish Garry’s memory are his wife of 25 years, Phyllis; his son, Jason McNutt; step-sons, Chris (Brandy) Jones and Jeremy (Tonya) Jones, grandchildren, Chase; Courtney; Matthew; Jaxon and Sarah, great-grandchildren, Reece and Cooper Jones and a mother in law, Betty Cresswell.
A Celebration of Garry’s Life will be held graveside in the Chattanooga National Cemetery on Friday December 16, 2022 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Rick Cresswell officiating. He will be laid to rest with full military honors.
Arrangements are under the care of the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
