He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Hazel Phillips
and a sister, Patricia. He is survived by his only known relative, a cousin,
Barbara Mesecar, in Alto, MI. John was a care giver to his mother and sister until their deaths.
John graduated from Hixson High School and attended Tennessee
Tech where he studied engineering. He held various positions at the Mueller
Company, Lockheed, Lorraine Crane, and Miller Industries.
John loved hunting and fishing with friends. He was an avid deer hunter
and a member of the Old Timers Hunting Club at Cherry Branch, TN.
He was a competitive shooter, and an excellent marksman. He also enjoyed
fishing in the Tennessee River and deep sea fishing near Panama City.
He was a longtime member of the North River Y and made many friends there. Having no local living family, his friends at the Y sort of adopted him. He was challenged with many health issues through the years, but always maintained a positive and independent spirit flavored with a sense of humor.
