I was saddened to hear of Larry’s passing. I have so many fond memories of him and he was a great friend, mentor and brother in Christ to me. Larry was a motivator for me to play guitar and sing at church and to love cars and drive fast that eventually led to me racing. I remember taking his Datsun 240z out on Hwy 29 (the new highway as we called it then) before it was officially open and running up to 135 mph. I was thrilled. And the time he picked me up in Knoxville my freshman year of college and we went to Bristol Motor Speedway to shake down his new race car and he let me drive a few laps. I’ll never forget those memories. Sandy I haven’t seen your Dad or you in years but I still feel a great loss. He was a significant part of my formative years. I am sorry for your loss and you are in my prayers. RIP dear Larry. You will be missed.

I meet Larry in the summer of 1980 I was 30 he must have been 30 or 31.  Larry had been conducting live fire training for TVA.  TVA decided to build a fire training center and hired some outside fire fighters, Dykie Gentry, Lee Hustead, Greg Van Horn and myself to develop and staff up the program.  We were temporally housed in the Chattanooga Bank Building across the hall from Larry’s office.  The first things that come into my mind when I think of Larry was that he was humble, had a warm smile and easy laugh.  Larry was one of those guys that you immediately liked!  But, Larry hated conducting live fire training.   He liked us, but I’m not sure it wasn’t because we were going to conduct fire training and he wouldn’t have to any longer.    We would rag each other every time that we would meet.  Dykie and I would never call him Larry Denayer but would call Larry “Daneyer.”  One of our favorite stories told by Larry was when he was conducting live fire training on an extremely hot day at Watt’s Bar.  He said, many of his students were dropping out because of the heat.  He said, that he was miserable and that, “I would had left but I was the instructor!”  Ha! Ha!  I believe every time that we would run into Larry afterward we would great him with, “Larry Daneyer, I would have left but I was the instructor!”  Larry would keep us updated on his work on his cars and show us pictures.   Another favorite story told my Larry was his ongoing battle and exploits with the beaver on his property.  He would get very serious when describing the many traits of a beaver.  He would try to sneak up on the beaver at night with his shot gun using different techniques and strategies but the beaver always won.  I imagined him as Bill Murray in Caddy Shack.  He would have us rolling with laughter!  

I can honestly say, that my life was enriched by knowing my friend Larry.  He was one of the good guys.  We all loved him.  I was deeply saddened upon hearing of his passing.  RIP Larry.
