She was known as “Granny Lucy” to everyone she met at her grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s softball, baseball, football and wrestling events. Referees for these events appreciated her insight even when they threatened to expel her from the game.
Granny Lucy loved her family, friends, the Atlanta Braves, “live” wrestling and the National Enquirer.
She raised three daughters as a single parent and worked many long hours to provide for them. She taught them the meaning of family, hard work, perseverance, fairness, humor and most of all right from wrong.
Sheila Higgins, the middle child; parents, Oscar and Bessie Bailey; brothers, Harry, John, Fred, Jimmy and Donald Bailey; sisters, Peggy and Elizabeth Bailey, Betty Headrick and Mildred Synder preceded her in death.
Left to cherish her memory, daughters, Teressa (Silas) Fletcher, Dayton, TN and Pam (Peter) Duffy, Chattanooga, TN.; grandchildren, Traci (Tom) Smelas, Shane (Cheryl) Fletcher, Shannon (Michael) Faires, T.J. Higgins, Jim (Staci) Higgins Chattanooga TN and Zollie (Tate) Cantrell, Knoxville TN. Twelve great grandchildren. A special thanks to Billie Varnes for the love and help she provided over the years.
The family will receive friends at 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. January 9 at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p. m in the Chapel of Devotion at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
