Nancy Ann (Lawton) Thornton, 95, was born on November 8, 1930, in Abbeville County, South Carolina, and passed away on April 21, 2026. She lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and leaves behind a life warmly celebrated—one marked by steadfast faith, deep devotion to family, and an adventurous spirit that carried her joyfully through each season.
Born to her mother, Eva Lawton, Nancy was 1 of 4 siblings. From the beginning, her life was rooted in the kind of love that becomes a foundation—quietly steady, sincerely cherished, and shared generously with those around her.
At 20, Nancy married Grady Thornton on June 30, 1951. Their early years together were full of motion and hopeful beginnings: they moved to Clemson where they welcomed their first daughter in 1952 while he was still attending university, and shortly after Grady graduated in 1954, their second daughter was born. They immediately packed their things and moved to Tennessee, staying for two years before moving to Mississippi in 1956. After ten years in Mississippi, they returned to Chattanooga, where the rhythms of home and community became an enduring part of their story.
Nancy was an excellent homemaker—a true “houseroom mother” whose care showed up in the everyday ways that matter most. She volunteered for anything her two girls were in and was also very involved in Girl Scouts, offering her time with a devoted heart and the kind of steady encouragement that makes others feel capable and seen.
Gifted with both patience and skill, Nancy was a wonderful seamstress and an excellent cook. Her hands could create comfort—through a well-made meal, a carefully crafted stitch, and the countless thoughtful touches that turn a house into a home.
Her faithful presence extended beyond her family as well. She served as President for the Home Demonstration Club, was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church, and was involved with the March of Dimes—each role reflecting a life lived with purpose, service, and sincere commitment to others.
In retirement, Nancy Ann (Lawton) Thornton loved to travel with her husband, embracing new places with the same curiosity and joyful openness that helped her meet life’s changes with grace.
The family offers heartfelt gratitude to Tammy Ashley and Rena Gayle, her caregivers for the past 3 years. Your kindness and steady support will be remembered with deep appreciation.
Nancy is preceded in death by her mother, Eva Lawton Skelton; her brother, Joe Lawton; and her infant sister, Jesse Skelton.
Here to continue her legacy is her beloved husband, Grady Thornton; daughters, Janet Thornton of Chattanooga, TN and Karen Jensen of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, Holly (Tad) Landowski of Littleton, CO, Kristopher (Emily) Jensen of Oviedo, FL, and Grady Jensen of Portland, OR, and great-grandchildren, Andrew Landowski, Collin Landowski, Taylor Landowski, Rex Jensen, Finn Jensen, Teddy Jensen and Leo Jensen, and her youngest brother, James Skelton of Texas.
