Thelma was born on February 17th, 1931, in Chattanooga. She graduated from Central High School in 1949. She married Charles Cox in 1951, and they were together until his passing in 2004. Their work led them on adventures all over the country, but their home was East Ridge, and they were always happiest surrounded by family and friends in their home.
She spent her entire life making sure her family was taken care of. Not a day went by when she didn’t check in on some loved one, and even in her later years, it was never about how she was doing, it was about how her grandchildren and great grandchildren were. She was a woman of class and dignity, with a servant heart.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Cox, and her daughter, Louise Cox Bowen.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Phillips (Scott) of Perkins, OK; grandchildren Andrea Kennedy (Darren) of Dunlap, TN, and Bruce Bowen (Leslea) of Bristol, TN; her five great grandchildren Lauren Ray (Issayah), Grayson Kennedy, Grace Bowen, Ella Bowen, and Alex Bowen; special family friend Truby Christman; her niece Rebecca O’Neal, and nephews John O’Neal, Van O’Neal, and Matthew O’Neal.
Special thanks to Thelma’s friends Lynn Sims and Kristin Habel, as well as to the staff at Garden Plaza of Greenbrier Cove where Thelma happily lived for the past several months.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 20th, at Chattanooga Funeral Home- North Chapel and Hamilton Memorial Gardens. Visitation is at 11:00 am, with the service to follow at 12:00 p.m. in the Chapel.
