

Thelma graduated from Soddy Daisy High School and attended Freed-Hardeman College in Henderson, TN. She became a working mother after being employed with Hamilton National Bank, Tennessee Egg Company, Camera and Craft, standard Coosa Thatcher, The Johnson Company, Terry Parks Company and Chattanooga Community College. Thelma was a member of the Church of Christ. Thelma’s last wishes were for all of her family and everyone who ever knew her to read their Bible regularly and believe in God’s Grace and Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William M. “Tarbaby” and Julie Goins Kidwell; and her husband of 34 years Howard Robert Payne and a sister, Tommie Ann Harvey.
Thelma is survived by her children, Michael Robert Payne and Stephanie, Ronald Lee Payne and Julie, Mitzi Fay Webb and Bill and Faralynn Jo Welch and Ted; seventeen grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; brother, Ted Alfred Kidwell; brother-in-law, Leonard Harvey, many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 7 pm on Sunday, August 17 and 10:30 am to 11:30 am on Monday at the North Chapel.
A celebration of life service for Thelma will be held at 11:30 am on Monday at the funeral home chapel with Minister Jerry Clements officiating. Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at Hospice of Chattanooga for their love and support given to the family on Thelma Payne. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416.
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
