Alberta W. Jones, a beloved mother, sister, and cherished matriarch, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025. Born in Keithville, Louisiana, to Menda Beck Moore Washington and Booker T. Washington, Alberta lived a life full of love, faith, and dedication to her family and community.
A proud graduate of Wheatley High School, Alberta married Vertine M. Jones, Sr. in Marshall, Texas. Alberta later moved to Houston, where she became an active member of St. Agnes Baptist Church. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was a generous soul, a mentor of life’s profound lessons, a thoughtful planner, and an educator dedicated to empowering future generations to grow stronger and wiser.
She was a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Along with Eugene Smith, Alberta created the Mary Elizabeth OES Grand chapter. Serving over 60 years, she ascended to the position of Supreme Grand Matron. She was awarded the Emeritus of the state of Texas. The highest award an Eastern Star can receive. Being a giver, she paid it forward by awarding the future generation the Alberta Jones scholarship
yearly.
Alberta retired from Sacco Company after years of dedicated service. She found joy in planning and attending family reunions that strengthened bonds across generations. An avid reader and traveler, Alberta embraced life with curiosity with a passion to share her knowledge and a purpose to help others.
She is survived by four generations who will continue to honor her legacy: her daughters, Carolyn and Robin; her sons, Jerald, Vertine Jr. and Jeffrey; her sister, Dorothy Young of Los Angeles, California; grandchildren, Tracy, Squirt and Brandon; special niece, Juanita Campbell; as well as many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and other relatives.
Alberta was preceded in death by her daughter, Debra Jones; sisters, Doris Jean Washington and Rebecca Turner; and brothers, Booker T. Washington Jr., Curtis Moore Sr. and Samuel Moore Sr. Alberta’s warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love touched all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she leaves behind as they celebrate a life well-lived.
