He attended St. Matthew High School. During his second year he joined the United States Army, serving from 1956 to 1959. He held positions in Artillery, Tank Battalion and Signal Corps. He participated in the
Summer Olympics in 1958, competing in the broad jump and the 200 dash. After serving his country, he moved to Houston in the Height area where he met the late Bernice Marie Webb. They were joined in holy matrimony in the year of 1971. He took on the role of father to her seven children, Ronald Wayne, William Douglas, Yolanda Faye, Sharel Ilean, Darryl Lynn, Andrea Yvonne, and Lashena Jaye until January 09, 2022. He was a member of Independent Heights Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Jerome
Nicholson. Austin was employed as a truck driver from 1963 until he retired in 2021. Austin and Bernice became legal guardians of their great-granddaughter Kaydence Culbert when she was only three days old.
He became the sole guardian of Kaydence when his wife passed away in 2022. She was well loved and cared for. He loved fishing, playing cards and dominoes. He leaves to cherish his memory, his baby sister Oretha Marie Moore and great-granddaughter Kaydence, who was the joy of his life, along with a host of nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.
Austin heard his Heavenly Father call his name, “My child your room is ready” on April 17, 2024.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice M. Culbert; parents, O’Neal and Oreline Culbert; three brothers, O’Neal Culbert, Jr., Clarence Culbert, who also served in the United States Army and Larry Culbert; two sisters, Eloise Murphy and Lucille Harrold.
