Christine Butler Pleasant of Pearland, Texas passed away on Friday, June 6th at the age of 98. She was born on January 7, 1927 in the community of Ratcliff, TX and then lived for many years in Chireno, TX. before moving to Houston.
Christine had several jobs over the years. She worked for the telephone company at the young age of 16. She had two sons and was a wonderful stay at home mom. She also worked at Sears and Roebuck, and then many years at Phillips Crane and Rigging.
She was actively involved in worship at Oldham Memorial Baptist Church and later at Shadycrest
Baptist Church in Pearland. She also enjoyed playing dominos with her husband M.C. and with friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her parents, J.W. Butler and Sallie Pate Jamison Butler; her husband of 59 years, Merle Clark Pleasant; and eight brothers and one sister. She is survived by her sister, Nina Layton; brother, Ronnie Butler; son, James C. Pleasant; son, Jerry D Pleasant and wife Kay Pleasant; grandchildren, Katherine, Dean, Lindsey, Cody and Matthew; great grandchildren, Blake, Marley, Colton, Lilly, Adley, Jack. Presley, Zach, Zane, Tate, Mckenzie, Kambri and Gunner.
One of Christine’s early memories was that she knew that her dad could not afford to send her to college. So, she decided that she wanted to take shorthand to better equip her for a job. Her school Superintendent, Mr. Lacy, said that he couldn’t let her do that as he was afraid that would be too many subjects for her to carry in her senior year. A couple of days after that conversation, Mr. Lacy came back to her and said that he would allow it but only with the stipulation that if she didn’t keep up her grades he would make her drop the class. Of course she kept all her grades up and also made A’s in shorthand! Mr. Lacy was such a nice Superintendent.
We cannot speak about Ninnie, as her 5 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren called her, without mentioning her legendary chocolate chip cookies. They were more than just a treat; they were a symbol of her love. She would bake dozens of them at a time and all of her grandkids, great grandkids and everyone in the room, would enjoy every single one of them! She also always had a cake ready for a family in need, neighbors, friends, and anyone who might need a little sweetness in their day. Those cookies and cakes were a reflection of her generosity and her desire to bring joy to others. Christine showed an unwavering love of family throughout her life. She touched many lives and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Trinity Oaks and also a special thank you to Farrell Smith and Stacey Ray for the care and compassion they showed our loved one in their final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at Forest Park Lawndale on Thursday, June 12th at 9am. Visitation with the family will occur prior to the service from 8am to 9am.
Interment to follow at the gravesite at 10am.
Family and Friends are invited to a light lunch to be served at the Church of Christ annex afterwards located at 2217 N. Grand Blvd, Pearland, Texas
